CHAPTER 6: THE DAY SOPHIE SPOKE

Months passed before Sophie was ready to speak formally about Vanessa.
Richard didn't sit beside her during every conversation.
That was another lesson.
Protection didn't mean controlling the story.
Sometimes protection meant allowing Sophie to discover that her voice belonged to her.
The legal process moved slowly.
Less dramatically than movies suggested.
There were interviews.
Documents.
Professional evaluations.
Records.
Richard learned to stop asking when it would be over.
Healing didn't follow court calendars.
Then one afternoon, Sophie emerged from an appointment holding Dr. Brooks's hand.
Richard stood.
Sophie walked toward him.
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“I told them.”
Richard crouched.
“How do you feel?”
She thought.
“Tired.”
He nodded.
“Then let's go home.”
She frowned.
“You're not going to ask what I said?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because you can tell me if you want to.”
Sophie stared at him for several seconds.
Then she hugged him.
That was the moment Richard knew something fundamental had changed.
Months earlier, Sophie had believed adults owned her silence.
Now she understood she owned her words.
Vanessa eventually faced consequences through the legal system.
Richard didn't take Sophie to watch.
He didn't celebrate.
There was no champagne.
No triumphant revenge.
Just an ordinary Tuesday morning when his attorney called and told him the matter had reached its resolution.
Richard thanked him.
Then he went downstairs.
Sophie was making pancakes with Mrs. Alvarez.
There was flour everywhere.
Absolutely everywhere.
Richard stared at the disaster.
Sophie froze.
Then Richard dipped one finger into the flour and put a white dot on her nose.
She gasped.
Mrs. Alvarez laughed.
Sophie grabbed flour.
“Don't you dare,” Richard warned.
She threw it anyway.
May you like
For thirty seconds, the kitchen descended into chaos.
And Richard laughed harder than he had in years.
