Chapter 15 - Standing on the SeawallOn a warm evening in late July, I stood on the stone seawall at the edge of my Wilmette property, watching the sun dip behind the tree canopy of the North Shore.

The lake was glass-still, reflecting the deep purples and oranges of the twilight sky.

My phone chimed in my pocket with a notification from my security system—a routine perimeter report showing clear gates and quiet grounds. I cleared the screen and looked back out over the water.

Ten years ago, I had sat on a curb in Evanston, staring at a wrecked car and listening to my sister tell me that our parents would always smooth things over. I had believed then that my choices were binary: submit to the lie, or lose everything I loved.

I had chosen the second path. It had been lonely, grueling, and long. But standing here on the ground I had bought with honest labor, surrounded by the life I had built with my own hands, I knew I had chosen correctly.

I hadn't just survived the cost of truth. I had built a life on top of it.
