Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

The downfall of Jeffrey Calvetti was swift, but Noelle and Cynthia were not women who surrendered easily. While Jeffrey was being led out of Calvetti Tower in handcuffs, surrounded by a swarm of media cameras, Noelle was already in the back of a luxury town car, her phone pressed to her ear.
"We need the boy," Noelle hissed into the receiver, her voice trembling with a mixture of terror and desperation. "If Madeline has the boy, she has all the leverage. The trust administrators won't settle if she holds all the cards. We need to find where she took him."
On the other end of the line was Carl Vance—no relation to Elena, but a dirty, high-priced private investigator who had handled Noelle’s "discreet" family matters for years.
"She didn't go to her penthouse," Carl said, his voice a low, gravelly rasp over the speaker. "And she didn't go to her office. My guys are watching the Sandy Springs pediatric clinic. Dr. Elena Vance’s private residence has a high-security perimeter, but we’ve spotted a rental SUV matching Madeline’s registration in the garage."
"Get him," Noelle ordered, her fingers clawing at her pearl necklace. "I don't care what you have to do. Take the boy. If we have him, we can claim Madeline is keeping him in an unsafe environment. We can force a custody hearing before the trust assets are permanently transferred."
Beside Noelle, Cynthia sat clutching her child, Austin, her face tight with a bitter, ugly rage. "She called me a secretary," Cynthia muttered, her perfect manicured nails digging into her leather purse. "She thinks she can just throw us out onto the street. I won't go back to that apartment in Gwinnett, Noelle. I won't."
"You won't have to, darling," Noelle said, her eyes staring out at the rain-slicked highway. "But we have to play dirty now. The Mercer family always thought they were untouchable because of their old money. They forgot that old money still bleeds."
Two hours later, a nondescript gray delivery van pulled up to the service entrance of Dr. Elena Vance’s estate in Sandy Springs.
Two men in dark industrial jumpsuits climbed out, carrying heavy toolboxes. To anyone watching, they looked like local utility contractors hired to repair the storm damage to the estate’s external generator. But beneath their heavy canvas jackets, both men carried compact, high-decibel stun batons and zip-ties.
They bypassed the external gate using a digital cloner provided by Carl Vance, slipping through the wet pine trees toward the rear entrance of the guest suite.
Inside, the suite was quiet. Liam was sitting on the edge of the bed, slowly eating a bowl of warm oatmeal Madeline had prepared for him. His tiny hands still trembled, but the wild, animal-like panic in his eyes had begun to soften, replaced by a quiet, watchful curiosity.
Suddenly, the glass pane of the rear French doors shattered with a sharp, muted crack.
Liam let out a terrified scream, dropping his bowl to the floor as he tried to scramble under the bed.
The two men in jumpsuits burst through the shattered door, their boots muddying the clean white rug. "Grab the kid! Quick, before the alarm—"
The lead man didn't finish his sentence.
The bathroom door swung open, and two large men in tactical gear—wearing the insignia of Blackwood Security, the private military contractor Marcus Mercer had hired to protect his family decades ago—stepped into the room.
The first contractor didn't fire a gun. He simply drove his heavy boot into the chest of the lead intruder, sending him crashing backward through the shattered glass doors and onto the wet stone patio.
The second intruder tried to draw his stun baton, but the second contractor caught him by the wrist, twisting it with a sickening snap that echoed through the room. The intruder screamed, dropping to his knees as he was pinned to the floor, his face pressed into the wet oatmeal.
Madeline stepped out of the bathroom behind them, her face completely calm. She didn't look at the screaming men. She walked directly to the bed, dropping to her knees, and pulled Liam into her arms, covering his ears so he wouldn't hear the groans of the defeated kidnappers.
"I told you, Jeffrey," Madeline whispered into her son's matted hair, though she knew he was miles away in a jail cell. "I built the traps before I ever left London."
She looked up at the lead contractor. "Who hired them?"
The contractor searched the pockets of the pinned intruder, pulling out a burner phone with a single, active number on the screen labeled Noelle.
"It’s the mother-in-law, ma'am," the contractor reported. "She’s waiting in a vehicle three miles away near the highway junction."
Madeline stood up, her hand gently stroking Liam's back. "Call the sheriff. Tell them we have an attempted kidnapping on camera. And tell them the mastermind is sitting in a black Lincoln Town Car near the exit ramp."

She looked down at the intruder on the floor.
"Noelle wanted to play dirty," Madeline said softly. "But she forgot that my father didn't just leave me money. He left me his monsters."
