Chapter 15 - The Light on the HillThe sun began to set over the western hills, painting the sky in vibrant shades of gold, rose, and deep indigo.

Back at the lodge, the warm yellow lights of the porch clicked on automatically, casting a gentle glow across the wooden deck and the flower garden below.
I stood by the kitchen window, watching Alex set up a wooden swing set he had spent three weekends building in the front yard. Maya was sitting on the grass nearby, handing him wooden pegs and toy tools, her sweet laughter echoing through the quiet evening air.
In the dining room, the large oak table was set for dinner. Arthur Pendelton and Dr. Sarah Vance were sitting on the sofa, sharing a bottle of wine and laughing over old stories from Arthur’s days as a young trial lawyer.
My home was full of life, full of love, and full of people who had stood by us when the world felt cold and terrifying.
I walked out onto the front porch, leaning against the wooden railing, taking a deep breath of the cool, crisp mountain air.
The nightmare of that 5:00 AM kitchen was a distant, faded memory now—a dark chapter in a book that had been closed forever. The scars on my body had faded into soft white lines, reminders not of my weakness, but of my survival.
Maya looked up from the grass, spotted me on the porch, and let go of Alex’s hand, running across the lawn toward the steps on her sturdy little legs.
"Mommy! Mommy! Look at the swing!" Maya shouted, reaching her arms up toward me.
I leaned down, lifted my daughter into my arms, and held her tightly against my chest. She smelled of sunshine, pine needles, and sweet baby lotion.
Alex walked up the steps, leaning against the doorframe, watching us with a bright, quiet smile.
I looked at my brother, then down at my daughter, and finally out at the peaceful, sunlit hills surrounding our home.

The dark was gone. The fear was gone.
In their place stood a fortress of strength, an unbroken family, and a bright, beautiful light that would burn for the rest of our lives.
