CHAPTER 6: THE AMBUSH ON ROUTE 9

The heavy black SUV roared through the darkness, its engine screaming as Marcus pushed the vehicle past eighty miles per hour on the two-lane suburban road. Rain had begun to fall, turning the asphalt into a slick, reflective mirror that blurred the red tail lights ahead.

I gripped the pistol tightly in my lap, my knuckles white, my eyes locked on the road through the sweeping motion of the windshield wipers. The cut above my eyebrow throbbed rhythmically with every heartbeat.

“They aren't just coming for you, Maya,” Marcus said, his hands glued to the steering wheel, his eyes scanning the pitch-black tree line lining the road. “Dean knows our protocol. He knows I’d try to move you to a safe house using Route 9. He’s coordinating with the extraction team.”

“Why would the Valenti syndicate listen to him?” I asked, my voice barely above a breath. “You said he owed them millions.”

“Because Dean is a coward, but he’s an intelligent coward,” Marcus replied grimly. “He probably convinced them he has a backup ledger—a physical master copy of all their regional distribution nodes and corrupt law enforcement contacts. Something to buy his life. And he’ll give them whatever they want if they give him you.”

Before I could process his words, a pair of blinding high-beam headlights flared to life behind us in the dark.

A massive, lifted gray pickup truck surged out of a dark side street, matching our speed effortlessly. A second later, a dark sedan pulled out of an intersection directly ahead of us, slowing down abruptly to block both lanes.

“Brace yourself!” Marcus roared, slamming his foot on the brake while spinning the steering wheel hard to the left.

The SUV skidded wildly across the wet asphalt, its tires howling against the road. The gray pickup slammed into our rear bumper with a sickening crunch of metal, sending a violent shockwave through the cabin. My head snapped back against the headrest as glass shattered somewhere in the cargo area.

Marcus recovered control in a fraction of a second, shifting into drive and plowing through a wooden guardrail on the shoulder. The SUV crashed through bushes and muddy terrain, bypassing the sedan block before slamming back onto the pavement further down the road.

“Marcus!” I screamed, looking out the side window.

The gray pickup was right alongside us now. The passenger-side window rolled down, revealing a masked man in tactical gear raising a short-barreled automatic rifle straight toward my window.

Without hesitation, Marcus unholstered his sidearm with his right hand, leaned across my chest, and fired four rapid shots straight through my passenger window.

The glass shattered into a million tiny safety cubes. The rounds struck the pickup’s driver through his door panel, causing the massive truck to veer wildly off the road, flip twice into the ditch, and burst into a ball of flame against a concrete telephone pole.

The roar of the explosion rattled our frame, but Marcus didn't slow down. He jammed his radio button.

“MAYDAY, MAYDAY! This is Agent Reed! We are under heavy ambush on Route 9 southbound! Multiple armed hostiles! Requesting immediate air support and tactical interdiction!”

Static burst through the speaker, followed by a cut-off, frantic voice: “Agent Reed... command center is compromised... do not trust primary frequency... repeat, do not—”

The radio went dead.

Marcus froze, his face going completely pale under the green dashboard lights.

“They have an insider in the regional office,” Marcus whispered, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. “That’s how they knew our route. They’re tracking my department radio.”

He violently ripped the radio unit from the dash, snapping the wiring, and tossed it out the broken window into the rain.

“We’re on our own,” he said, looking at me with absolute, chilling focus. “Nobody is coming.”
