Part 3: Someone Inside the School Betrayed Her Trust

Part 3

Someone Inside the School Betrayed Her Trust

Officer Daniel Brooks lowered his radio slowly.

The color had drained from Rebecca Lawson's face.

"I didn't break into the school," she whispered.

"I was told where to find her."

Emily felt a knot tighten in her stomach.

Only four people outside the courthouse knew Ava's school.

Emily.

The principal.

Ava's classroom teacher.

And the district's student protection coordinator.

After the adoption became final, the family court had ordered Ava's school records sealed.

Her address was confidential.

Her emergency contacts had been verified every semester.

The system existed for one reason.

To protect children with dangerous custody histories.

Someone had ignored it.

Officer Brooks motioned toward another patrol officer.

"Please stay with Mrs. Lawson."

Then he turned to Emily.

"I need to ask you a few questions."

Emily nodded.

Ava still refused to let go of her hand.

"It's okay, sweetheart."

"We're just going to figure out what happened."

Officer Brooks spoke quietly.

"Has anyone recently asked unusual questions about Ava?"

Emily thought carefully.

Then something surfaced.

Three weeks earlier...

A woman claiming to be from the school district had called.

She politely confirmed Ava's classroom.

Dismissal schedule.

And transportation arrangements.

Emily remembered asking why.

The woman had replied,

"We're updating emergency safety records."

The explanation had sounded reasonable.

Emily answered every question.

Now...

Her blood ran cold.

"I think someone tricked me."

Officer Brooks wrote several notes.

"Did they identify themselves?"

"They gave a first name."

"What was it?"

Emily closed her eyes.

"...Karen."

Officer Brooks immediately called dispatch.

"Run all district employees named Karen."

Within minutes, another officer returned from the school office carrying security records.

Principal Linda Morris looked completely shaken.

"I don't understand."

"We never release protected student information."

Officer Brooks remained calm.

"We'll verify that."

The school's technology coordinator soon joined them.

Together they opened the student access logs.

Every protected file required an electronic record.

Every click.

Every download.

Every print request.

Nothing could be hidden.

The room became silent as they searched.

Then...

A timestamp appeared.

Three days earlier.

Protected Student File Accessed.

User ID:

Karen Whitfield.

Administrative Assistant.

Emily frowned.

"I've never met her."

Principal Morris looked horrified.

"Karen works at the district office."

Officer Brooks asked,

"Did she have authorization?"

The principal slowly shook her head.

"No."

"Not for this file."

Another report appeared.

Student address printed.

Emergency contacts printed.

Class schedule printed.

Everything Rebecca needed.

Officer Brooks quietly exhaled.

"Now we know how she found the school."

But the mystery only deepened.

Why would an administrative assistant risk her career for a woman she supposedly didn't know?

At that exact moment...

Rebecca suddenly spoke.

"I don't know any Karen."

Everyone turned toward her.

Officer Brooks studied her face carefully.

"You've never spoken to Karen Whitfield?"

Rebecca hesitated.

"No."

"I swear."

The hesitation was enough.

Officer Brooks asked another question.

"Who contacted you first?"

Rebecca stared at the pavement.

Then quietly admitted,

"I received a letter."

"A handwritten letter."

Emily's heartbeat quickened.

"What did it say?"

Rebecca reached into her purse again.

"I kept it."

She unfolded a worn envelope.

There was no return address.

No signature.

Only one sentence.

Your daughter is alive. Here's where you'll find her.

Below it...

A school address.

Dismissal time.

And today's date.

Officer Brooks examined the handwriting.

"It was mailed."

Rebecca nodded.

"Two weeks ago."

"I thought..."

Her voice cracked.

"I thought someone was giving me a second chance."

Emily watched the woman closely.

For the first time...

She no longer saw someone trying to steal her daughter.

She saw someone who had also been manipulated.

Officer Brooks reached the same conclusion.

"You were being used."

Rebecca looked confused.

"Used?"

"Someone wanted this confrontation."

Emily whispered,

"But why?"

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

Yet.

Meanwhile...

Across town...

District employee Karen Whitfield was cleaning out her desk.

She seemed unusually calm.

Almost relieved.

Until two detectives entered the office.

"Ms. Whitfield?"

She smiled politely.

"Yes?"

"We need to ask you about a confidential student file."

Her smile disappeared.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

One detective placed printed computer logs on her desk.

Alongside surveillance photographs showing her entering the records office.

Karen's hands began shaking.

"I..."

"I can explain."

"Please do."

Tears filled Karen's eyes.

"I never wanted anyone hurt."

"Someone paid me."

Emily's attorney later listened to the recorded interview in complete silence.

Karen confessed that six months earlier...

An anonymous man had contacted her.

He knew she was drowning in debt after her husband's cancer treatments.

He offered fifty thousand dollars.

All she had to do...

Was locate one protected child.

Print the records.

And forget it ever happened.

She never met him.

All communication happened through disposable phones.

Cash was left inside storage lockers.

Officer Brooks frowned.

"Did you ever see his face?"

Karen nodded slowly.

"Only once."

She swallowed hard.

"He wasn't Rebecca's friend."

"He wasn't from the court."

"He wasn't even asking about Rebecca."

"He only wanted the little girl."

Those words sent a chill through everyone in the room.

Officer Brooks looked toward Emily.

"This was never about reconnecting a biological mother with her daughter."

Emily felt her knees weaken.

"Then what was it about?"

Karen's answer barely rose above a whisper.

"He said..."

"...once the child was found..."

"...someone else would come for her."

Silence filled the room.

Officer Brooks immediately picked up his radio.

"Lock down the school."

"Increase patrols around the Carter residence."

"No one approaches the child without verification."

Emily hugged Ava tighter than ever.

She had believed the worst was over.

She was wrong.

Rebecca Lawson had only been the bait.

Someone far more dangerous...

Had been watching from the shadows all along.

May you like

And now that Ava had been found...

The real hunt was about to begin.
