Chapter 23 - EMMA READS THE VIDEO

At twelve, Emma asked to see the kitchen recording.
I had always known the day might come.
The file remained preserved with legal records.
Dr. Grant helped us decide how.
Not alone.
Not the entire evidence archive.
Only the original clip.
Emma watched herself at two.
Small.
Round-cheeked.
Half a sausage in her hand.
Diane’s slap.
Emma flinched.
Then came the sentence.
Your daddy said not to call her when you cry.
She paused the video.
“Dad knew?”
“He knew Grandma sometimes used discipline I had not agreed to. He told her not to call me because he wanted the childcare arrangement hidden.”
“Did he tell her to hit me?”
“We have no evidence he asked her to hit you.”
“Did he know she might?”
“He knew she had used physical punishment before and saw the pantry incident.”
Emma stared at the frozen screen.
“So he knew enough.”
“Yes.”
She cried quietly.
I let her.
No speech about forgiveness.
No demand that she remember Mark’s later change.
She asked:
“Did you cancel Grandma’s medicine?”
I laughed despite the moment.
“No. That story became exaggerated.”
I explained the card.
“My money. Extra expenses. Her health insurance stayed.”
“So you didn’t make her sick?”
“No.”
“Good.”
She watched the rest.
My arms entering frame.
Lifting her.
Diane following.
Emma touched the screen.
“You look mad.”
“I was.”
“You didn’t yell.”
“Not then.”
“Would you now?”
“Probably.”
She smiled slightly.
We watched no more.
Emma asked whether Mark knew she had seen it.
“That’s your choice.”
“Can I tell him?”
“Yes.”
She called him with Dr. Grant present.
“I watched the kitchen video.”
Mark became silent.
“Okay.”
“You told her not to call Mom.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I wanted Grandma’s care to look like it was working.”
Emma’s jaw tightened.
“Did I have to look okay for your plan?”
“Yes.”
“I hate that.”
“You should.”
“I hate you a little.”
Mark took a breath.
“I understand.”
“No, you don’t.”
“You’re right. I can listen.”
Emma cried.
Then ended the call.
She did not visit him for three weeks.
Mark did not file motions.
Did not send gifts.
Did not call me to fix it.
He told her once through the therapist:
May you like
Take the time you need.
That was the moment I first believed his change might last even when it cost him the relationship he wanted restored.
