Within forty-eight hours of our meeting at Bankhaus Roth, federal agents in the United States and Interpol officers in Europe launched coordinated raids. Thomas Sterling was arrested at an airfield in Miami while attempting to board a private jet to South America. His offshore accounts were frozen, and his entire asset-stripping network was dismantled.
In prison, Mark Bennett received the news through his court-appointed attorney.
The last dream he had clung to—the belief that he might one day inherit a hidden fortune in Zurich after serving his sentence—was utterly shattered. His remaining appeals were dismissed, his bankruptcy was finalized as bad-faith fraud, and his sentence was extended due to his involvement in the forged Savannah land transfer scheme.
He was left with nothing: no money, no title, no freedom, and no legacy.
Two weeks later, Julian and I returned to Baltimore.
The autumn leaves were turning bright shades of gold and crimson along the harbor. My shop, Vance & Sterling Rare Book Conservation, was thriving, attracting master artisans and historic preservation contracts from across the country.
On a rainy Thursday afternoon, I sat in my private office above the shop, reviewing the blueprints for a new initiative: The Margaret Bennett Foundation for Women’s Independence—a non-profit organization funded by the Zurich trust, dedicated to providing legal aid, housing, and career training for women escaping financial abuse and coercive marriages.
A soft knock sounded at my door.
Julian walked in, wearing his charcoal coat, carrying two warm cups of coffee. He set one down on my desk, leaning against the edge with a gentle smile.
"Sterling pled guilty this morning," Julian said quietly. "Full cooperation. He won't be seeing the light of day for fifteen years."

"Mark’s legal team dropped his final civil counter-suit," Julian replied. "He has formally signed away any and all future claims to the Bennett estate or trust. It's completely over, Eleanor."
