Chapter 8 - The Subpoenas ArriveTodd ran to the side window, pulling back the blind. “It’s the county sheriff. There are two deputies on the porch.”

Martin’s face went gray. “What... what do they want? Did Daniel call the police on us?”
Steven walked to the door, pulled open the side panel, and stepped out onto the porch. Two uniformed Warren County sheriff’s deputies were standing in the snow, holding thick stacks of white legal envelopes sealed with red tape.
“Martin Collins?” the lead deputy asked, checking a clipboard.
“He’s inside,” Steven said, his heart pounding against his ribs.
The deputies stepped through the plywood door into the living room. The twenty-two family members watched in horrified silence as the lead deputy approached Martin’s chair.
“Martin Collins,” the deputy said formally, handing him a thick, heavy packet. “You are hereby served with a civil summons and subpoena from the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio.”
Martin took the packet with shaking hands. “A... a subpoena?”
“In addition,” the deputy continued, addressing the room, “I have twenty-three individual subpoenas for Steven Collins, Todd Collins, Richard Collins, Mark Collins...”
The deputy began handing out the white envelopes one by one.
Steven tore his envelope open, his eyes scanning the dense legal text.
UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT — SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF OHIO
WHITAKER HOLDINGS LLC v. MARTIN COLLINS, STEVEN COLLINS, et al.
ACTION FOR FORENSIC AUDIT RECOVERY, CORPORATE CONVERSION, & CIVIL FRAUD.
“What is this?!” Uncle Richard gasped, dropping his envelope onto the floor as if it were on fire.
“It’s a corporate clawback lawsuit,” Arthur Vance’s voice echoed from the open doorway.
The family turned.
Arthur Vance stepped into the foyer, wearing his long navy trench coat, carrying his leather briefcase. Behind him stood two senior forensic accountants from Deloitte & Touche, carrying portable digital scanners.
“What are you doing in my house?!” Martin yelled, staggering to his feet.
“Mr. Collins,” Arthur said coolly, pulling a court order from his pocket. “This morning, Judge Katherine Roberts signed an emergency order for forensic asset preservation. Over the last thirty-six months, you and your sons misappropriated $1.2 million in Whitaker Construction funds for non-business personal use.”
Arthur pointed to the grand fir tree in the corner, surrounded by luxury presents—designer handbags, gold watches, and high-end electronics.
“Under the asset preservation order,” Arthur announced, “every luxury item purchased using Whitaker Construction corporate cards within the last ninety days is subject to immediate legal impoundment.”
Linda let out a blood-curdling shriek. “They’re taking our Christmas presents?!”
“No, Mrs. Collins,” Arthur corrected her gently. “We are taking Mr. Whitaker’s property back.”

The two forensic accountants stepped into the room, opening large plastic storage totes, and began systematically logging and packing the unopened designer boxes beneath the tree.
Martin sank back down into his chair, staring at the floor, his chest heaving as the reality of his total financial ruin finally crushed him. He wasn't just unemployed. He was facing civil fraud judgments that would strip him of his house, his savings, and his retirement.
