Chapter 14 - The Unshakable FoundationSummer 2031

The summer months brought warm, sun-drenched days to the Pacific Northwest, turning the coastal waters of Puget Sound into brilliant sheets of turquoise and cobalt blue.

We spent our weekends at our new home in North Bend, gardening, hiking the lower mountain trails, and tending to a small, vibrant vegetable garden out back.

Unlike the garden on Maple Street, this one was filled with bright heirloom tomatoes, sweet bell peppers, and rows of fragrant basil. There were no hidden trenches, no rusted valves, and no locked doors.

On a bright Sunday afternoon, while Maya was napping upstairs, I sat at the wooden patio table reviewing a final draft of our foundation’s five-year state expansion plan.

Detective Cole Voss—who had retired from the police department the previous year to join the foundation as our director of security and investigative compliance—walked out onto the patio holding two cold glasses of iced lemonade.

He set one down beside my laptop, pulling up a chair.

“State Senate Judiciary Committee just confirmed the schedule for next month’s legislative hearing,” Cole reported, leaning back in his chair. “They want you to testify as the primary expert witness on the new interstate financial control and probate reform bill.”

I looked up from the documents, smiling faintly. “We’re really going to change the law, aren't we, Cole?”

“We already are,” Cole said, taking a sip of his lemonade. “Every time a judge references the Carter Precedent to throw out a fraudulent guardianship filing, we rewrite the rules of the game.”

He looked out over the green lawn toward the towering wall of pine trees framing our property.

“You know, Tessa,” Cole said quietly, “I’ve seen a lot of dark things in my twenty years on the force. But I’ve never seen anyone turn an absolute tragedy into an indestructible fortress quite like you did.”

“I didn't do it alone,” I answered, raising my glass in a quiet toast to the empty air. “I had a very good detective, a wonderful neighbor, and a daughter who decided to keep breathing when everything else tried to stop her.”

Cole smiled, clinking his glass against mine under the warm summer sun.
