Chapter 19 - EVELYN’S FIRST VISIT

Lily was eight when she asked to see Evelyn.

Not because Evelyn requested it.

Because a school project involved grandparents.

“Everybody has pictures.”

“You have pictures.”

“I want to know if she’s still mean.”

Children can be direct in ways courts cannot.

Maya recommended one supervised meeting if Evelyn remained compliant and Lily retained control.

The court approved.

Neutral therapy center.

Thirty minutes maximum.

Evelyn arrived early.

No jewelry.

No family driver.

She sat across from Lily.

“Hi.”

“Hi.”

Silence.

Then Lily asked:

“Why didn’t you help me?”

Evelyn began crying.

Maya interrupted gently.

“Answer without asking Lily to comfort you.”

My mother breathed.

“Because I was afraid of Grandpa and Aunt Tessa being angry with me, and I cared more about keeping the family calm than keeping you safe.”

Lily stared.

“You were grown-up.”

“Yes.”

“So that’s stupid.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know Aunt Tessa hit me?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know Grandpa held me?”

“Yes.”

“And you still put me outside?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I wanted your dad to arrive after everyone had calmed down.”

Lily frowned.

“I wasn’t calm.”

“No.”

The meeting lasted eighteen minutes.

Lily ended it.

“I want to go.”

We left.

In the car, I asked:

“How are you?”

“Hungry.”

We got pizza.

That was all.

She did not forgive Evelyn that day.

She did not become more damaged.

She obtained answers.

Years later, she would see Evelyn occasionally.

Always by choice.

The relationship became limited.

Birthday cards.

Lunch twice a year.

No unsupervised caregiving.

No financial authority.

Some relationships do not return.

They become something smaller and safer.
