Chapter 4 - The Rat in the HouseThe ICU waiting room suddenly felt like a cage.

For years, I believed I was the master chess player of Chicago, moving my capos, politicians, and business rivals like pawns on a board. But while I was busy building an empire and indulging in luxury apartments for Serena Hayes, my own wife had systematically dismantled my entire operation from the inside out, using my own private vault keys against me.

“She was going to federalize us,” I muttered, staring at the affidavit on the glowing screen. “Everything we built... gone in a single digital keystroke.”

“Which means,” Mateo added quietly, “she wasn't just a target for Lorenzo Moretti. If Moretti’s men knew she was carrying that ledger to a meeting on the South Side... they didn't just assassinate my wife because of a territory war. They assassinated her because she was holding the keys to the kingdom.”

My head snapped up. “Someone inside my organization tipped off the Morettis.”

“Think about it, Boss,” Mateo reasoned, his eyes hard. “Only three people outside of you had the master security codes to your private vault where that ledger was originally stored: me, Julian, and your brother-in-law, Marcus.”

Julian was my chief of security operations, a cold-blooded enforcer who had bled for me for a decade. Marcus was my corporate lawyer, a slick, Harvard-educated shark who handled our legitimate fronts.

Either my head of security, my corporate lawyer, or my closest confidant had betrayed me to the South Side.

“Bring them both in,” I ordered, my voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register that made even Mateo look twice. “I want Julian and Marcus dragged into this hospital basement before sunrise. No questions. No warnings. If they resist, break their legs.”

“Done,” Mateo said, turning sharply toward the door.

“And Mateo?”

He paused, looking back over his shoulder.

“Check on Clara’s surgery status. If the doctors let her die... I want to know immediately.”

Left alone in the sterile waiting room, I paced the floor like a caged animal. Every tick of the wall clock echoed like a hammer strike. The woman lying under a surgical knife two floors above me wasn't just my wife anymore; she was a mystery wrapped in a conspiracy, a stranger who had shared my bed while plotting my total destruction.

Yet, as I stared down at the blood still staining the cuffs of my custom shirt, a sickening, hollow ache twisted in my chest.

I didn't care about the ledger. I didn't care about the offshore accounts, the federal indictments, or the billions of dollars at stake.

All I could see was her pale, battered face as the gurney rushed past me, and the platinum diamond ring dangling from her lifeless finger.

If she died tonight taking my secrets to the grave, I would burn Chicago to the ground looking for the bastard who pulled the trigger.
