Chapter 17 - Shadows in the DocketWhile the sanctuary expanded its reach, a sudden tremor shook the regional legal system.

In late autumn, Arthur Pendelton arrived at Alex’s timber lodge late in the evening. The rain was beating steadily against the glass windows, and the fire in the great stone hearth crackled softly, throwing warm amber light across the room.

Alex set a hot mug of coffee in front of Arthur, noticing the grave, focused expression on the old attorney's face.

"What's happened, Arthur?" Claire asked, sitting on the sofa after putting four-year-old Maya to sleep upstairs.

"Trent’s defense team filed an emergency petition for sentence commutation yesterday," Arthur reported, pulling a legal brief from his coat. "They are citing a technical procedural error made by District Attorney Reed’s office during the original grand jury indictment process."

Alex’s posture stiffened instantly, his hand tightening around his coffee mug. "A procedural error?"

"It appears one of the secondary grand jury summons forms was improperly stamped by a junior clerk in the county clerk's office," Arthur explained. "It's a minor administrative technicality, but Trent's new legal team—funded by a remaining insurance trust—is claiming it invalidates the state assault convictions."

"What about the federal bank fraud charges?" Claire asked, her voice remaining surprisingly calm.

"The federal convictions are ironclad," Arthur assured her. "Even in the absolute worst-case scenario where the state court grants a rehearing, Trent remains in federal custody until at least 2038. But his lawyers are attempting to use this petition to reopen the civil custody agreements regarding Maya."

Claire looked into the glowing coals of the fireplace.

Four years ago, the sound of Trent’s name would have sent a wave of cold terror through her chest. Now, looking at the warm room, listening to the rain on the roof, she felt no fear—only an unshakeable, iron resolve.

"They want to drag us back into a courtroom to exhaust us," Claire said quietly.

"They think you'll panic and offer a settlement to avoid a public hearing," Arthur nodded.

"I won't panic," Claire said, standing up and looking Arthur dead in the eye. "And we aren't settling. File a cross-motion for frivolous litigation and request an immediate summary dismissal based on the federal estoppel doctrine. We fight every single line."

Arthur looked at her, a proud, sharp smile spreading across his face. "I'll have the brief filed by eight AM."
