Chapter 18 - The Fall of the House of ColeThe jury deliberated for less than ninety minutes.

When the court reconvened at 3:30 PM, the foreperson—a stern-looking woman in her fifties—read the verdict into the official record:

"On Count One, Aggravated Identity Theft: Guilty."

"On Count Two, Class 2 Felony Bank Fraud: Guilty."

"On Count Three, Unlawful Restraint: Guilty."

The courtroom remained dead silent except for a low, strangled gasp that broke from Fiona’s lips in the gallery. She collapsed back into her bench, clutching her chest, weeping hysterically into a crumpled paper tissue.

Judge Robert Sterling looked down from the bench, his face unreadable as he reviewed the jury's verdict sheet.

"Mr. Cole," Judge Sterling said, his voice deep and stern. "You operated a systematic scheme of financial deception against your own spouse, culminating in an act of physical confinement intended to break her spirit. You showed no remorse, refused to take responsibility, and blamed your actions on family pressure."

Judge Sterling brought his gavel down with a heavy, final BANG.

"Sentence is set at four years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, followed by two years of mandatory supervised release. Restitution orders from the civil judgment remain in full effect. Remand the defendant into custody."

Two uniformed bailiffs stepped up behind Julian.

Julian turned frantically toward the gallery, looking past the prosecutors, past his weeping mother, until his frantic, bloodshot eyes locked onto mine.

"Sloan!" he cried out, his voice cracking with pathetic, raw terror as the handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. "Sloan, tell them! Tell them it went too far! Please, tell them to stop!"

I stood by the prosecution table, holding my leather portfolio.

I didn't smile. I didn't yell. I didn't feel a surge of vengeance.

I simply looked at him—a thirty-four-year-old man finally forced to face the consequences of his own choices—and gave him a single, quiet nod of farewell.

"Goodbye, Julian," I whispered.

The bailiffs led him through the heavy side door, and the lock clicked shut behind him.
