Chapter 10 - The Preliminary HearingTwo weeks later, I sat in the front row of Courtroom 3A at the St. Jude County Courthouse.
I was two weeks away from my due date, wearing a neat navy maternity dress. Beside me sat Elena Ruiz.
Across the room, sitting at the defense table in orange inmate jumpsuits, were Ryan and Patricia. Ryan looked hollow—his hair unwashed, his eyes sunken, his posture completely broken. Patricia looked like a shadow of her former self, stripped of her pearl earrings and designer clothes, her hands cuffed to a leather waist belt.
Their high-priced defense attorney, a man named Sterling, stood up to address Judge Henderson.
“Your Honor,” Sterling began, trying to sound confident. “My clients request an immediate reduction in bail and the suppression of the video evidence. The recording device inside the clock was installed without my client’s explicit knowledge, violating state wiretapping privacy laws—”
Judge Henderson held up a hand, interrupting him instantly.
“Mr. Sterling,” Judge Henderson said, his voice echoing through the silent courtroom. “The recording device was installed in a home owned solely and separately by the victim’s father, inside a common kitchen area where there is no legal expectation of privacy against the property owner. Motion to suppress is denied.”
Sterling paled. “Your Honor, my client Ryan Cole is facing the total liquidation of his business—”
“Your client Ryan Cole is facing ten to fifteen years in state prison,” Judge Henderson corrected sternly. “The grand jury has returned a formal indictment on all six felony counts.”
I looked over at Ryan. A single tear rolled down his pale cheek as he stared at me, his lips trembling, silently mouthing the words: I’m sorry, Claire.
I didn't answer. I didn't blink.

I simply rested my hand on my belly, feeling my daughter kick strongly against my palm, knowing that her future was safe, her home was secure, and her mother had won.
