PART 4: THE SECRET MY FATHER HID

PART 4: THE SECRET MY FATHER HID
For the first time since I escaped Adrian…
I felt afraid.
Not because of Vanessa.
Not because of the investigation.
Not because of the court.
But because of my father’s silence.
I had spent my entire life believing one thing about him.
He never lied to me.
He protected me.
He was the one person in the world who would always tell me the truth.
But when Vanessa said those words…
Ask your father.
He didn’t deny it.
That was what scared me.
The car ride home was silent.
My father sat beside me.
Looking out the window.
Not like a powerful man.
Not like the person everyone feared.
Like a man carrying a memory he wished he could bury.
Finally, I spoke.
“What happened before I married Adrian?”
He didn’t answer.
“Dad.”
His fingers tightened around his cane.
“I wanted to tell you.”
“But?”
He closed his eyes.
“But you were happy.”
The words hurt.
Because I understood.
He wasn’t hiding it because he didn’t care.
He was hiding it because he thought he was protecting me.
Again.
Everyone kept deciding what pain I could handle.
“I deserve the truth.”
He nodded.
“You do.”
A long silence.
Then:
“Adrian wasn’t the first person who wanted to use you.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
My father looked at me.
“Before you met him, I investigated him.”
I stared.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you let me marry him?”
Pain crossed his face.
“Because the investigation showed nothing.”
“Nothing?”
“He had a clean record.”
“A successful business.”
“Good references.”
I laughed bitterly.
“So he fooled you too.”
My father looked away.
“No.”
A pause.
“He didn’t fool me.”
I froze.
“What?”
“He fooled the world.”
My father opened an old file.
Inside were photographs.
Adrian.
Vanessa.
A third person.
I recognized him.
One of Adrian’s biggest investors.
“Who is that?”
My father answered quietly:
“Marcus Black.”
The name meant nothing.
But my father’s expression told me everything.
“Adrian’s mentor.”
I frowned.
“He introduced Adrian to many powerful people.”
“And?”
My father looked at me.
“He also introduced him to Vanessa.”
The room became silent.
A cold feeling moved through me.
“So this was planned?”
My father nodded.
“Not from the beginning.”
“But later.”
Years ago, Adrian was ambitious.
Hungry.
He wanted power.
Marcus saw that.
He saw a young man willing to do anything.
So he shaped him.
Taught him.
Connected him.
And eventually…
Turned him into someone who believed people were just tools.
“He created Adrian.”
My father said.
“And Adrian became exactly what Marcus wanted.”
I looked at the files.
“And Vanessa?”
“She was part of the plan.”
I felt sick.
Everything.
The marriage.
The lies.
The humiliation.
All connected.
But one question remained.
“Why me?”
My father was quiet.
Then answered:
“Because of your inheritance.”
I frowned.
“What inheritance?”
He looked at me.
“Your mother’s family.”
I froze.
“My mother?”
My father nodded.
“Your mother wasn’t just from a wealthy family.”
“She was the last owner of a private trust.”
A trust worth billions.
A trust I never knew existed.
My breathing stopped.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because the moment people knew…”
He looked at me.
“You would become a target.”
I remembered Adrian.
The marriage.
The accident.
The abuse.
The pieces connected.
That night, I couldn’t sleep.
I kept thinking about everything.
Adrian.
Vanessa.
Marcus.
My father’s secrets.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But something made me answer.
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Evelyn?”
I sat up.
“Who is this?”
“My name is Sofia.”
The name meant nothing.
Then she said:
“I worked for Marcus Black.”
My heart started racing.
“Why are you calling me?”
A pause.
Then:
“Because Adrian and Vanessa were never supposed to hurt you this much.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“They were supposed to scare you.”
The room went cold.
“Explain.”
Her voice shook.
“Marcus wanted you afraid.”
“Not broken.”
I couldn’t breathe.
“Why?”
“Because he wanted you to sign something.”
“What?”
Silence.
Then:
“The transfer papers.”
I froze.
“What transfer papers?”
Sofia whispered:
“Your mother’s trust.”
My blood turned cold.
Because I had never signed anything.
But then…
I remembered.
Two months before the accident.
Adrian asked me to sign documents.
He said they were insurance papers.
I trusted him.
I signed.
My hands trembled.
“What did I sign?”
Sofia answered:
“The document that gave them control.”
The next morning…
I rushed to my father.
When I told him, his face changed.
Not surprise.
Fear.
“Dad?”
He stood immediately.
“Where are the documents?”
“I don’t know.”
He grabbed his phone.
“Richard needs to check every record.”
I looked at him.
“Tell me the truth.”
He stopped.
“What?”
“Did Adrian succeed?”
My father didn’t answer.
And that silence destroyed me.
Because after everything…
After all the suffering…
May you like
The possibility remained.
Maybe they had already won.
