Chapter 2: The Truth They Never Read
I stopped with my hand on the front door.
Without turning around, I answered quietly.
"No."
"I didn't do this to family."
"You did."
The room fell silent.
Dad took a step toward me.
"Natalie..."
"This is just a misunderstanding."
I looked back at him.
"For ten years, every time the company needed saving, you called me."
"When Brielle's businesses failed, you called me."
"When the bank threatened foreclosure, you called me."
"I showed up."
I glanced toward my sister.
"But the moment I said 'no' to giving away something I earned..."
"...I became the enemy."
Brielle folded her arms.
"You've always thought you were better than us."
"No."
"I simply stopped pretending your choices were my responsibility."
Just then...
Dad's phone rang.
He answered immediately.
"This is Richard Whitmore."
A long pause followed.
His face slowly lost all color.
"I understand."
He ended the call with trembling hands.
"The board..."
"They're meeting without me."
"They've suspended my voting rights."
May you like
I nodded.
"They're following the bylaws you signed."
