Chapter 7 - The BoardroomAt 2:00 p.m., Thomas drove us to downtown Richmond.

The law offices of Vance & Sterling occupied the top floor of a glass tower overlooking the James River. Arthur Vance sat at the head of a long mahogany conference table, clad in his sharp charcoal suit, three thick blue leather folders spread before him.

Beside him sat two independent child-safety advocates: Dr. Aris Thorne, a leading pediatric trauma surgeon from VCU Health, and Sarah Lin, a former federal transportation safety investigator.

"Claire," Arthur acknowledged, standing up and shaking my hand with steady warmth. "Welcome. I believe you've reviewed the preliminary biographies of Dr. Thorne and Ms. Lin."

"I have," I said, taking my seat at the center of the table. "Thank you both for accepting a role on this board."

"It's an honor, Mrs. Miller," Dr. Thorne said gently. "What you're building with this capital is going to save hundreds of children across this state."

Arthur opened the central binder. "Let's review the immediate operational allocation. The $18.7 million settlement—after legal disbursements and estate clearing—yields an initial endowment of $16.2 million. Under the irrevocable trust terms you signed on Friday, the principal is locked in high-yield municipal bonds and secure index funds."

He pulled out a cash-flow projection chart.

"The annual investment yield will generate approximately $850,000 in operating capital every single year without touching a single dollar of the core principal," Arthur explained. "Fifty percent of that annual yield is earmarked for the Lily & Noah Equipment Distribution Program—purchasing and distributing medical-grade, high-impact car seats to rural clinics and low-income community centers across Virginia."

Sarah Lin leaned forward, tapping her copy of the agenda. "And the remaining fifty percent funds our legal advocacy arm. We’ve already identified three commercial freight logistics firms operating out of the Port of Virginia with severe federal drive-time compliance violations."

"We aren't just giving away car seats, Claire," Arthur smiled, his dark eyes glinting with fierce legal sharpness. "We are going to use your foundation to legally dismantle every commercial freight company in this region that forces exhausted drivers onto public highways."

I looked down at the documents, running my fingers over the gold-embossed seal at the top of the page: THE LILY & NOAH CHILD SAFETY FOUNDATION.

My parents had seen millions of dollars and thought of luxury villas, Italian leather, and country club memberships.

Standing in this glass boardroom, looking at doctors, investigators, and attorneys dedicated to protecting children, I saw the only legacy worthy of my family's names.
