Chapter 9

The weekend arrived quickly,
bringing with it a cool,
and refreshing autumn breeze,
that swept away the last of the summer heat.
Jessica and Emma decided to go for a long walk,
heading toward the large botanical gardens,
located just a few miles away,
from their quiet neighborhood.
The trees were changing colors rapidly,
displaying brilliant shades of bright red,
and deep orange,
and golden yellow,
against the clear blue sky.
Emma ran ahead on the winding path,
collecting the most beautiful leaves,
and putting them carefully into her small pockets.
Jessica followed closely behind,
her hands tucked warmly into her jacket,
enjoying the crisp air,
and the completely stress-free afternoon.
In the past,
a day like this would have been ruined,
by a sudden phone call from her mother,
complaining about some trivial slight,
or demanding that they change their plans immediately.
But her phone remained perfectly silent,
resting peacefully in her purse,
because she had finally blocked those numbers,
protecting her precious peace of mind.
They reached the center of the gardens,
where a large stone fountain sat,
spraying crystal clear water into the air,
creating tiny rainbows in the sunlight.
Emma sat on the edge of the fountain,
tossing small pennies into the water,
and closing her eyes tightly,
to make secret wishes.
Jessica sat next to her,
wrapping her arm around the small shoulders,
and kissing the top of her head.
I wished for a puppy,
Emma whispered softly,
opening her bright eyes,
and looking up at her mother hopefully.
Jessica laughed out loud,
a genuine sound of pure joy,
that echoed beautifully across the quiet garden.
We will have to see about that,
she answered playfully,
knowing that for the first time in years,
she actually had the emotional capacity,
to consider taking on a new pet.
They continued their long walk,
stopping to admire the late-blooming roses,
and the tall sunflower stalks,
that towered over their heads.
They found a small wooden bench,
hidden beneath a massive oak tree,
and sat down to rest their tired legs.
Jessica pulled a small container of grapes,
and two juice boxes from her backpack,
handing them to her eager daughter.
They ate their simple snack in silence,
listening to the birds singing cheerfully,
in the branches high above them.
It was in these small,
and seemingly ordinary moments,
that Jessica felt the most profound healing.
There was no need for grand gestures,
or expensive gifts to prove their love,
just the simple act of being together,
without any hidden agendas,
or painful emotional manipulation.
Emma rested her head on Jessica's lap,
and fell asleep almost instantly,
exhausted by the fresh air,
and the endless running around.
Jessica stroked her fine hair gently,
feeling a fierce,
and unbreakable protective instinct,
rising up deep inside her soul.
She would never let anyone hurt this child again,
not Vanessa,
not her mother,
not anyone in the entire world.
She had built a strong,
and completely impenetrable fortress around them,
made of firm boundaries,
and absolute self-respect.
The sun began to set slowly,
casting long shadows across the grass,
and dropping the temperature significantly.
Jessica gently woke her sleeping daughter,
and they walked back to their car hand in hand,
May you like
ready to go back to their safe,
and perfectly peaceful home.
