Chapter 2: The Little Bunny Left Behind

The stuffed bunny lay alone on the polished marble floor.

Its left ear, stitched together three different times with blue thread, rested beside a tiny pink shoe that Lily had somehow lost.

Nora stared at it.

For one unbearable second, her mind refused to understand what her eyes were seeing.

Then reality struck.

"Lily!"

Her scream echoed through every hallway of Whitmore Estate.

She ran toward the ballroom entrance, desperately searching the crowd.

"Lily!"

Guests stepped aside.

Some looked horrified.

Others awkwardly lowered their eyes.

Only minutes earlier, they had watched a wealthy woman humiliate a child.

Now...

That same child had vanished.

Lock Down the Estate

Marcus Sullivan was already issuing orders through his radio.

"Seal every gate."

"No one leaves the property."

"Search teams Alpha and Bravo cover the gardens."

"Charlie Team, every guest vehicle."

Within seconds, security officers spread across the twelve-acre estate.

The Whitmore mansion had been designed to keep intruders out.

Tonight...

It might have trapped a kidnapper inside.

Caleb picked up Lily's stuffed bunny.

His jaw tightened.

"How long?"

Marcus answered immediately.

"Less than ninety seconds."

Caleb looked at him.

"Ninety?"

Marcus nodded.

"The cameras show Nora speaking with you upstairs."

"The guests were distracted."

"When everyone looked toward the staircase..."

"...someone took Lily."

Sloane's Performance

Sloane stepped forward dramatically.

"This is terrible."

"We need to call the police."

Caleb slowly turned toward her.

His eyes were ice cold.

"They're already on their way."

She reached for his arm.

"Caleb..."

He stepped back.

"Don't."

Her expression hardened.

"You seriously think I'd kidnap a child?"

"I don't know what you're capable of anymore."

The words hit harder than a slap.

Around them, several guests quietly exchanged uneasy glances.

The perfect couple everyone admired only an hour ago no longer existed.

Henry Notices Something

Henry bent down to pick up Lily's shoe.

As he turned it over...

Something fell out.

A tiny folded piece of paper.

Everyone froze.

Marcus carefully unfolded it.

Only four handwritten words appeared.

She remembers the song.

"What does that mean?" Nora whispered.

Caleb frowned.

"A child remembers songs."

Henry suddenly looked toward Nora.

"Does Lily sing?"

Nora nodded.

"Every night."

"The same lullaby my mother used to sing."

Henry's face turned pale.

"Mrs. Whitmore's lullaby?"

"Yes."

Henry whispered to himself.

"My God..."

The Old Music Room

Henry hurried toward Caleb.

"There's one place."

"What place?"

"The old music room."

Caleb frowned.

"No one uses it."

"Exactly."

Henry looked terrified.

"Your mother used to play that lullaby every evening."

Nora stared.

"My mother knew that song."

Henry nodded.

"Maria learned it from Mrs. Whitmore."

Caleb immediately understood.

"If someone wrote 'She remembers the song'..."

"They're sending us there."

Without another word, the group hurried toward the west wing.

The Forgotten Piano

The music room had remained untouched for nearly a decade.

Dust covered the grand piano.

Curtains blocked the moonlight.

Family portraits watched silently from faded walls.

"Lily?"

Nora called softly.

No answer.

Caleb slowly crossed the room.

Then...

He heard it.

A tiny voice.

Humming.

Very softly.

Behind the piano.

Nora ran forward.

"Lily!"

She stopped.

The little girl wasn't there.

Only her stuffed bunny.

And taped to the piano...

Another note.

You're looking in the wrong generation.

Marcus immediately examined the room.

"No footprints."

"No broken windows."

"Whoever did this knows the house."

Caleb's heartbeat quickened.

"This isn't random."

Eleanor's Memory

Eleanor Holloway suddenly gasped.

"I remember."

Everyone turned.

"My goodness..."

She looked toward Caleb.

"Claire used to hide here."

"When?"

"When she played treasure hunts."

Henry smiled sadly.

"She loved secret passages."

Caleb frowned.

"There aren't any."

Henry hesitated.

"There weren't supposed to be."

He walked toward the fireplace.

Pressed one carved wooden panel.

A loud click echoed through the room.

The bookshelf slowly swung open.

Behind it...

A narrow stone staircase descended beneath the mansion.

Marcus drew his flashlight.

"Stay behind me."

Beneath Whitmore House

The tunnel smelled of old stone and damp earth.

Gas lamps lined the walls.

Most had burned out decades earlier.

Caleb recognized the passage immediately.

"My grandfather built this during Prohibition."

Henry nodded.

"To move valuables unseen."

The tunnel stretched beneath the mansion toward the old carriage house.

Halfway down...

Marcus stopped.

"Something's here."

On the ground lay another object.

A small silver music box.

Nora burst into tears.

"Lily loves that music box."

She wound it gently.

The familiar lullaby filled the tunnel.

Then...

A tiny voice answered.

"Mommy?"

Everyone froze.

"Lily!"

"I'm here!"

The voice echoed from farther ahead.

Nora ran despite Marcus's warning.

At the end of the tunnel stood a heavy wooden door.

Locked.

"Lily!"

"I'm scared."

"I'm coming, baby!"

Marcus kicked the door once.

Twice.

On the third strike...

It burst open.

Safe... But Not Alone

Lily sat quietly inside an old storage room.

She wasn't hurt.

She wasn't tied up.

She simply hugged her knees.

When she saw Nora, she burst into tears.

"Mommy!"

Nora scooped her into her arms.

"I've got you."

"I've got you."

Caleb knelt beside them.

"Did someone bring you here?"

Lily nodded.

"A nice lady."

"What lady?"

"The lady cried."

Everyone looked confused.

"Cried?"

Lily sniffled.

"She said she was sorry."

"She said she had to hide me before..."

Lily frowned, trying to remember.

"...before the bad man found me."

Marcus looked sharply at Caleb.

"There are two people involved."

The Hidden Envelope

While the others comforted Lily, Henry searched the storage room.

"Mr. Whitmore."

Caleb turned.

Henry pointed toward an old wooden chest.

Inside rested a sealed envelope.

Across the front, elegant handwriting read:

For the Child With Claire's Eyes.

Nora stared.

"Lily?"

Caleb slowly opened it.

Inside was another letter written by his late mother.

It read:

If this letter is found, then the child has finally returned. Protect her before you discover why she matters. Someone has spent years searching for what only she can unknowingly reveal.

Caleb's pulse raced.

He turned the page.

A faded photograph slipped out.

It showed his late sister Claire.

Standing beside Maria Reyes.

Holding...

A newborn baby wrapped in a pink blanket.

On the back were eight handwritten words:

The promise begins with this little girl.

Nora looked at the baby.

Then at Lily.

Her voice trembled.

"No..."

"That's not possible."

Just then, Marcus's radio crackled loudly.

"Emergency."

Marcus answered.

"This is Sullivan."

The dispatcher sounded breathless.

"We've identified a vehicle leaving the estate."

"Driver?"

There was a long pause.

Then came the answer that stunned everyone.

"It belongs to Miss Sloane Fairchild."

Marcus looked toward Caleb.

"But..."

"She never left the ballroom."

Caleb slowly raised his eyes.

"If Sloane was inside the house..."

May you like

"...then who just drove away using her car?"
