CHAPTER 5 — THE KNOCK THAT ENDED THE MORRISON DYNASTY

CHAPTER 5 — THE KNOCK THAT ENDED THE MORRISON DYNASTY

The doorbell rang again.

No one moved.

The shattered crystal from Diane's wineglass still glittered across the marble floor, untouched.

The butler looked toward me.

"Ms. Hale?"

I gave a single nod.

"Please let them in."

Seconds later, four people entered the foyer.

They weren't dressed like police officers.

Dark business suits.

Government identification.

Leather briefcases.

Calm expressions that came from years of delivering bad news to powerful people.

The woman leading them introduced herself.

"Good evening. I'm Special Agent Rebecca Lawson with the Federal Financial Crimes Task Force."

She held up her credentials.

"We're here to execute federal search warrants and serve preservation orders."

Brendan forced a laugh.

"This has nothing to do with us."

Agent Lawson looked directly at him.

"Mr. Brendan Morrison?"

"Yes."

"You are named in the warrant."

The room seemed to shrink.

Jessica instinctively stepped away from Brendan.

Only half a step.

But everyone noticed.

Agent Lawson opened a folder.

"Mr. Morrison, over the past eight months our office has been conducting an investigation into suspected corporate fraud, wire fraud, tax violations, and conspiracy involving Hale Strategic Technologies."

Brendan pointed toward me.

"Then you want Cassidy."

"No."

Lawson's answer was immediate.

"We want the people who attempted to steal from Ms. Hale."

She turned another page.

"Our investigation began after Ms. Hale voluntarily reported irregular financial activity and fully cooperated with federal authorities."

Every pair of eyes turned toward me.

I had known.

Not everything.

But enough to suspect something was wrong.

Instead of hiding it, I had reported it.

Quietly.

Months ago.

Diane suddenly stood.

"My family has done nothing wrong."

Lawson calmly removed another document.

"We have email records suggesting otherwise."

She handed copies to each investigator.

One stopped beside Diane.

Another beside Brendan.

A third approached Jessica.

Jessica blinked.

"Why me?"

"You served as an authorized user on three financial accounts."

"I was planning charity events!"

"Some of those charity expenses paid for jewelry, luxury vacations, and private shopping."

Jessica's lips parted.

She looked at Brendan.

"You told me those accounts were approved."

Brendan couldn't answer.

Because he had never checked.

Then Agent Lawson reached the final page.

"This warrant authorizes the seizure of electronic devices used in connection with company finances."

One investigator stepped forward.

"Phones, tablets, laptops."

Brendan pulled his phone closer.

"You need another warrant."

"We already have one."

Lawson slid it across the table.

Signed.

Stamped.

Valid.

Morgan, the Corporate Security Director, simply folded her arms.

"My team will assist."

Within minutes, laptops disappeared into evidence bags.

Hard drives were labeled.

Company-issued phones were collected.

No one argued anymore.

The Morrison family finally understood this wasn't a negotiation.

It was a process.

As investigators worked, Brendan walked slowly toward me.

For the first time in years, his voice carried no arrogance.

Only desperation.

"Cassidy..."

I looked at him.

"I know I failed you."

Silence.

"I know my mother treated you terribly."

Silence again.

"I should've stopped it."

He swallowed hard.

"I was stupid."

I said nothing.

He reached toward my hand.

"I never wanted this."

I stepped back.

"No."

My voice stayed calm.

"You wanted exactly this."

He frowned.

"You just never imagined you'd be the one losing."

He lowered his head.

"When did you stop loving me?"

The question lingered between us.

I answered honestly.

"The day I miscarried our first baby."

His face drained of color.

"You blamed me for crying."

He closed his eyes.

"You told me your meeting mattered more than our child."

A tear slid down his cheek.

"I was angry."

"No."

I shook my head.

"You were selfish."

Another silence.

"I kept trying after that."

"So did I."

My hand rested gently against my stomach.

"But this baby deserves a mother who knows the difference."

Before Brendan could answer, Agent Lawson approached again.

"Mr. Morrison."

He turned.

"You'll need to accompany us tomorrow morning for a formal interview."

Brendan nodded weakly.

He no longer had the energy to argue.

As the investigators gathered their evidence, the Morrison mansion—once filled with laughter, arrogance, and certainty—felt strangely hollow.
