Chapter 15 - THE WEDDING DATE

The date we were supposed to marry arrived four months after the ice-water incident.

I had forgotten until my calendar reminder appeared.

CEREMONY — 4:00 PM.

I stared at it.

Deleted.

That was all.

No symbolic trip to the venue.

No destruction of invitations.

No speech.

The venue had refunded part of our deposit.

Adrienne and I split unrecoverable costs under our settlement.

My portion:

$31,000.

Expensive lesson.

Ilaria spent the day at a children’s science museum.

She did not know it had been the wedding date.

Good.

That evening she asked:

“Why no Adrienne anymore?”

We had answered before.

She asked again because children repeat questions when the answer keeps changing inside them.

“Because she hurt you and because she broke important rules.”

“Because I didn’t say Mom?”

“No.”

“Would she stay if I said it?”

My throat tightened.

“No.”

“Promise?”

“Yes.”

That promise was safe.

Adrienne was legally barred from contact.

Then:

“Can you marry somebody else?”

“Someday maybe.”

“Will they make me say Mom?”

“No.”

“What if they want?”

“Then they will learn no.”

She smiled.

Good.

The next week, I met with the new trustee care team.

We removed every unnecessary family-role phrase from Ilaria’s plan.

Caregiver.

Parent.

Aide.

Therapist.

Vendor.

No:

Maternal integration.

No:

Replacement family.

Legal and clinical nouns.
