Chapter 3 - The Shadow of Andrew

I sat frozen in the hard hospital chair, the steady beep-beep-beep of the heart monitor sounding like a distant warning bell. My mind struggled to process the words Maria had just spoken.
Andrew. My brilliant, reckless younger brother.
Growing up, Andrew was always the darling of the family. Where I was methodical, quiet, and devoted to running our father's commercial real estate empire, Andrew was charismatic, impulsive, and constantly chasing high-stakes investments. When he disappeared six years ago, it shattered our family. I personally funded private search crews for six months, holding out hope until every lead went cold.
"Maria, listen to me very carefully," I said, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to keep it steady. "Andrew’s boat was recovered with a shattered hull. The police report confirmed a severe storm hit the coast that night. How can you sit here and tell me he isn't dead?"
"Because I was with him four months before he disappeared, Mr. Daniel," Maria whispered, her breath hitching in her chest. "I wasn't working for your family back then. I was working at a private resort in Baja, Mexico, where Andrew stayed whenever he wanted to escape Los Angeles. We... we had a brief relationship. I knew it was a mistake, but he was charming, and he swore he loved me."
She squeezed my hand tighter, her bruised fingers shivering.
"When I realized I was pregnant, I went to tell him. It was two weeks before his boat went missing. But when I met him at his apartment in Marina del Rey, he wasn't alone. Vanessa was there."
I felt the air leave my lungs. "Vanessa? You knew Vanessa six years ago?"
"I didn't know her name then," Maria explained, her eyes filled with painful memories. "She was introducing herself as Victoria back then. She was working as an independent financial consultant for high-net-worth individuals. I heard them arguing behind closed doors about bank accounts, wire transfers, and offshore entities in the Cayman Islands. When Andrew realized I had heard them, he panicked. He gave me twenty thousand dollars in cash and told me to leave California. He promised he would send for me once he sorted out his financial mess."
"And you left?"
"I was terrified, Mr. Daniel. I went to stay with my sister in East LA. Four months later, the news announced that Andrew Whitmore had drowned at sea. I thought my baby's father was gone forever. I grieved for him."
"Then why did you come to work for me three years ago?" I asked, my mind spinning.
"Because three years ago, I saw him," Maria whispered, leaning so close I could smell the metallic tang of hospital antiseptic on her breath. "I was shopping at a market in San Diego. A man walked past me wearing dark sunglasses and a hat. But I knew his stride, his hands, the scar on his jaw. It was Andrew. I followed him to a car, and when he took off his glasses to answer his phone, I saw his face clearly. He wasn't dead. He was living under a completely new identity."
"Did he see you?"
"No. But I realized then that whatever had happened six years ago was a lie. I needed to protect my son's future. I applied for the house manager position at your Beverly Hills estate under my maiden name to find out what really happened to the Whitmore inheritance. I needed to know if Andrew had abandoned his own blood while living off stolen money."
I rubbed my temples, feeling a sharp migraine forming behind my eyes. "And Vanessa? How did she end up in my life?"
"She re-entered your life eighteen months ago, didn't she?" Maria asked pointedly. "She met you at a charity gala in San Francisco. She didn't call herself Victoria anymore—she was Vanessa Vance, a successful art curator. Mr. Daniel, that was no coincidence! She targeted you. She spent years helping Andrew move his money, and now she has positioned herself to marry you and step into the top of the Whitmore empire!"
The puzzle pieces began falling into place with terrifying speed.
Eighteen months ago, I had met Vanessa at an art fundraiser. She was elegant, brilliant, and understood the pressures of wealth and corporate responsibility. I had fallen for her completely. We were scheduled to be married in less than three months at our estate in Santa Barbara.
"What was in the envelope she tried to take from you tonight, Maria?" I asked, my voice dropping to an icy tone.
"A copy of Noah's birth certificate listing Andrew as the father, and a forensic accounting report I hired a private investigator to pull on Vanessa’s art gallery," Maria revealed. "The gallery is a shell company, Mr. Daniel. It’s being used to launder money—millions of dollars that originally belonged to your family's firm before Andrew vanished."
I stood up slowly from the chair. My chest felt hollow, but my mind was clearer than it had been in years.
"Where is Noah right now?" I asked firmly.
"He’s with my sister, Rosa, in East Los Angeles," Maria said, her voice tight with panic. "Mr. Daniel, please... if Vanessa knows about Noah, she knows he is the direct blood heir to Andrew’s portion of the family trust. She will do whatever it takes to protect her scheme."
"She won't touch him," I said, setting my jaw. "Stay here. The hospital has security, but I will hire private guards to stand outside your door tonight."
I turned and walked out of the hospital room, stepping back into the long, brightly lit corridor. As I walked back toward the main lobby, my hands clenched into fists at my sides. Everything I had built, everything I believed about my family, and the woman I planned to spend the rest of my life with were all constructed on a web of lethal deceit.

When I reached the waiting room, the vinyl chair where Vanessa had been sitting was empty. Her paper cup of tea sat cold on the side table.
She was gone.
