Chapter 5 - The Girl Who Had Never Been Silent

That night, Santiago did not leave Sophia’s side.

He sat across from her on the bedroom carpet.

No desk.

No guards.

No authority.

Just a brother.

Ruby sat beside them.

Sophia’s hands trembled as she began telling the truth.

After the crash, Carlo visited her in the hospital.

Santiago had been meeting doctors.

Sophia remembered Carlo sitting beside her bed.

He smiled.

Then he told her that their mother had died because she talked too much.

If Sophia told anyone what she saw, Santiago would die next.

Twelve years old.

Injured.

Mother dead.

Brother in danger.

Sophia stopped speaking.

At first deliberately.

Then fear took control.

Weeks became months.

Months became years.

Doctors called it trauma-induced mutism.

Nobody knew the threat behind it.

Santiago lowered his head.

He had spent seven years protecting Sophia from outsiders.

Never realizing the danger was already inside the family.

“I should have known.”

Ruby shook her head.

“You were grieving too.”

Santiago looked at her.

“That doesn’t excuse seven years.”

“No.”

Ruby never lied to comfort him.

He appreciated that.

“But you can change what happens next.”

Santiago looked toward Sophia.

Slowly, he signed:

No more fear.

Sophia answered.

Together.

The following morning they went to Northwestern.

Maeve’s clue led Ruby to the linguistics department.

An old professor recognized her.

“Ruby Brennan?”

Ruby smiled faintly.

“Professor Adler.”

The elderly professor hugged her.

“I thought I’d never see you again.”

Santiago watched.

For the first time, he saw a version of Ruby that existed before her life collapsed.

Confident.

Respected.

Brilliant.

Adler took them to an archive room.

Maeve had left a sealed package with him four years earlier.

Instructions said it could only be released to Ruby.

Inside was a flash drive.

Copies of everything.

Payments from Halston Institute.

Shell companies.

Carlo’s accounts.

False medical billing.

Bribes.

And something worse.

A recorded conversation.

Maeve’s voice.

Carlo’s voice.

Santiago listened.

Carlo was demanding that Maeve destroy records.

Maeve refused.

Then Carlo said:

“You have a daughter. Elena has two children. Smart women should remember what they can lose.”

Ruby covered her mouth.

Santiago’s expression became terrifyingly calm.

They finally had proof.

Enough to destroy Carlo financially.

Possibly criminally.

But Carlo moved first.

By evening, news reports appeared.

Anonymous sources claimed Santiago Moretti had kidnapped and intimidated a former medical worker named Ruby Brennan.

Old accusations against Ruby resurfaced.

Her lawsuit.

The stolen files.

Her firing.

Online, she became a criminal again within hours.

Ruby stared at her phone.

Three years of humiliation returned in a single evening.

“I can’t do this again.”

Santiago took the phone from her hand.

“Then don’t.”

“What?”

“Don’t fight him his way.”

Ruby looked up.

Santiago placed the phone on the table.

“We have evidence.”

“He has money.”

“So do I.”

“He has connections.”

“So do I.”

“He can destroy people.”

Santiago’s expression softened slightly.

“So can I.”

Ruby stared at him.

“But this time,” Santiago said, “we do it legally.”

That surprised everyone.

Even Tomas.

The evidence went to federal investigators through attorneys.

Copies went to journalists.

Insurance fraud investigators received the billing records.

The institute’s board received Maeve’s documentation.

Within forty-eight hours, Dr. Voss resigned.

Within seventy-two, investigators executed warrants.

Carlo disappeared.

But before leaving, he took one thing.

Sophia.

It happened during a security shift change.

A trusted Moretti guard opened the side gate.

Sophia had been walking in the garden.

By the time Santiago knew, the vehicle was gone.

Ruby found Sophia’s phone beside the roses.

Santiago became a man she had never seen before.

Every trace of warmth vanished.

“Tomas.”

“We’re searching.”

“Find her.”

“We will.”

Ruby picked up Sophia’s phone.

There was a message.

No text.

A photograph.

Sophia sitting in a chair.

Alive.

Terrified.

Behind her was a brick wall.

Santiago stared.

Then another message arrived.

Bring the drive. Come alone.

Ruby studied the photograph.

Something caught her attention.

Sophia’s right hand.

Three fingers extended.

Thumb folded.

Then another subtle shape.

Ruby zoomed in.

“Santiago.”

He turned.

“She’s talking to us.”

“What?”

“Her hand.”

Ruby studied it.

Sophia had positioned her fingers deliberately.

Signs.

Not words.

Letters.

B.

E.

L.

L.

Santiago frowned.

“Bells?”

Ruby looked at the background.

Old brick.

Industrial windows.

Then Santiago understood.

“The Bell Foundry.”

An abandoned Moretti property near the river.

Carlo believed he had kidnapped a helpless silent woman.

He had made the same mistake everyone else had made for seven years.

Sophia was not helpless.

May you like

And she had just told them exactly where she was.
