Chapter 4: The Man Behind The Betrayal

The Ashford mansion had never felt so quiet.

Not even after Evelyn’s funeral.

Not even after the lawyers announced the division of her estate.

Not even after Adrian buried himself in work because facing his daughter’s grief was harder than facing any enemy.

But tonight was different.

Tonight, the walls of the mansion were holding secrets that could no longer stay buried.

Adrian sat in his private office, staring at the photograph on his desk.

Evelyn.

His wife.

The woman who had smiled at him every morning.

The woman who had promised him they would grow old together.

And standing beside her was Daniel Cross.

His best friend.

His business partner.

The man who had held Adrian’s shoulder at Evelyn’s funeral and told him, “I don’t know how you’ll survive this.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

He had spent two years believing Daniel was the only person who understood his pain.

Now he wondered if Daniel had been the person who caused it.

The office door opened.

Mateo Reyes, Adrian’s head of security, stepped inside holding a tablet.

“We found something.”

Adrian looked up.

“What?”

Mateo placed the tablet on the desk.

“Security footage from the night Evelyn died.”

Adrian pressed play.

The video showed the driveway.

Rain.

Darkness.

Evelyn’s car leaving the property.

Then, twenty minutes later…

Another vehicle followed.

Adrian leaned closer.

“Zoom in.”

The image became clearer.

A black SUV.

A familiar license plate.

His stomach turned.

“Daniel.”

Mateo nodded.

“But there’s more.”

He changed the footage.

This time, it showed Vanessa entering the office three days ago.

She wasn’t alone.

She was carrying a folder.

Adrian watched silently as Vanessa opened a hidden compartment behind the bookshelf.

A place only family members knew existed.

“What was inside?”

Mateo looked uncomfortable.

“Documents.”

“What documents?”

“Your late wife’s medical records.”

Adrian stood.

Slowly.

Dangerously.

“Why would Vanessa have Evelyn’s medical records?”

No one answered.

Because everyone knew the answer was terrifying.

Meanwhile, Clara stood outside the office door, listening.

She didn’t mean to.

But when she heard Evelyn’s name again, she couldn’t walk away.

Adrian opened the door and found her there.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Adrian surprised her.

“Come inside.”

Clara hesitated.

“Mr. Ashford, I’m only a maid.”

Adrian looked at her.

“No.”

His voice softened.

“You’re the woman who protected my daughter when everyone else failed.”

Clara looked away.

She wasn’t used to kindness.

Not from people like him.

Adrian continued.

“I need to know something.”

“What?”

“Why did you risk everything for Emma?”

Clara swallowed.

Then she answered quietly.

“Because when I was six years old, someone saved me.”

Adrian frowned.

“Who?”

Clara looked toward the rain-covered window.

“My mother.”

A pause.

“She worked as a maid too.”

Adrian stared at her.

“Where?”

Clara turned back.

“At the Ashford estate.”

The room went completely still.

Because Adrian suddenly realized something.

Clara Bennett wasn’t just a maid.

She was connected to his family’s past.

And she might be the final piece of the truth Evelyn died trying to reveal.
