CHAPTER 4: BREAKING THE WILL

The sight of my father’s handwriting sent a cold shockwave straight down my spine.

That drive wasn't part of Caleb’s scheme. It was Dad’s insurance policy—the physical evidence he had hidden before his death, knowing his own family would try to tear his legacy apart the moment his heart stopped beating.

“Give it to me,” I said, stepping away from the defense table and walking toward the witness stand.

Victoria froze, her fingers clutching the small metal rectangle against her palm. She looked at me, then darted a terrified glance toward Caleb.

“Don't you dare give her that drive, Mom!” Caleb roared, struggling against the iron grip of the two federal agents pinning his arms behind his back. “Destroy it! Press the pin! Press it now!”

That was the moment the final piece of the puzzle clicked into place.

Victoria hadn't been testifying to help Caleb win control of the company. She wasn't the mastermind, nor was she a willing accomplice. She was terrified of her own son. Caleb had been blackmailing her, using the illegal foreign transactions he had orchestrated to keep her obedient.

“Mom,” I said softly, stopping three feet from the witness stand. The entire courtroom watched in dead silence; even the judge held his breath. “Dad gave that to you to protect you if things went wrong. Give it to me.”

Victoria’s hand trembled so violently the metal drive clicked against her rings. Her eyes brimmed with genuine tears as she looked into my face—really looked at me—for the first time in three years.

Slowly, agonizingly, her fingers uncurled. She extended her hand and dropped the cold metal drive into my open palm.

“You fool!” Caleb shrieked, his face twisting into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury. “You pathetic, weak old fool!”

With a violent, desperate surge of strength born of utter madness, Caleb drove his elbow backward into the ribs of the agent holding his left arm. The agent grunted, his grip slipping on the wet floor. Caleb broke free, spun around, and reached straight for the second agent’s holstered sidearm.

Metal clicked against leather.

“GUN!” a officer yelled.

The gallery dissolved into screams as people threw themselves beneath the wooden pews.

Caleb ripped the Glock 19 from the officer's holster, racked the slide back with a sharp metallic clatter, and grabbed Victoria by the hair, yanking her out of the witness box and shoving the barrel directly against her temple.

“Nobody move!” Caleb screamed, his eyes bloodshot, sweat dripping down his chin. “Back up! Everyone back up right now or I put a bullet through her head!”

Major Hayes instinctively stepped in front of me, placing his broad frame between Caleb’s weapon and my chest. General Warren remained completely still, her hand moving smoothly toward her hip.

“Caleb...” Victoria whimpered, her hands flying up to clutch her son’s wrist, her face pale as ash. “Caleb, please... I’m your mother...”

“Shut up!” Caleb screamed, tightening his grip on her hair. “You ruined everything! You were supposed to press the pin on the drive!”

He glared across Major Hayes’s shoulder, locking his eyes onto mine.

“Give me the drive, Mara!” he demanded, his finger tightening visibly around the trigger. “Give it to me right now, or she dies!”

I looked at the small metal drive in my palm. I looked at my father’s handwriting. Then I looked at my brother’s frantic, desperate eyes.

I didn't hand it over. I didn't drop to my knees.

Instead, I raised the drive high above my head, placed my thumbs on either side of the casing, and snapped the hard metal drive clean in half.

A tiny wisp of smoke curled from the broken micro-circuitry.

Caleb stared at the broken pieces in my hand, his eyes widening in complete, paralyzed horror. “You... you fool! You just destroyed the only master copy!”

I met his gaze with absolute coldness.

“The drive was just a key, Caleb,” I said softly. “The files were automatically decrypted and mirrored to the Department of Defense secure server the exact second Mom opened the encryption latch on her sleeve five minutes ago.”

Caleb’s jaw dropped. “What...?”

Before he could process the lie, the heavy courtroom doors swung open for the third time.

A squad of five FBI tactical agents in heavy body armor flooded into the room, their rifles raised, red laser dots dancing across Caleb’s chest and arms.

“FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP THE WEAPON! DROP IT NOW!”
