Chapter 1 — The Medal That Carried a Nation's Secret

No one breathed.
Colonel Marcus Vance held the weathered silver medal as though it weighed a thousand pounds.
His eyes never left Maya.
"I haven't seen this insignia in twenty-four years," he said quietly.
"It belonged to one family."
The ballroom remained frozen.
Victoria folded her arms, forcing herself to smile.
"A military souvenir proves nothing."
Vance slowly turned toward her.
"No."
"It proves everything."
He carefully flipped the medal over.
On the back, nearly erased by time, were six tiny engraved numbers.
0714-AE-19
"I carved these numbers myself," Vance whispered.
Gasps rippled through the room.
"When General Adrian Ellison sent his infant daughter into protective evacuation, I engraved this medal before placing it around her neck."
He looked directly at Maya.
"The child disappeared that same night."
"The convoy was ambushed."
"Everyone believed she died."
Maya stared blankly.
"My... father?"
Vance nodded slowly.
"Your father wasn't just a soldier."
"He was America's most decorated war commander."
"He sacrificed everything to stop one of the largest military corruption conspiracies in modern history."
The room erupted.
Business leaders exchanged nervous glances.
Politicians suddenly looked uncomfortable.
Victoria's smile disappeared.
"That's impossible."
"The General never had surviving children."
May you like
Vance answered without emotion.
"That's exactly what someone wanted the world to believe."
