Chapter 3: The Daughter They Tried to Erase

The words on the adoption document seemed to burn into Victoria Hale’s mind.

“The truth about Lily’s father will destroy the Hale family.”

For seven years, Victoria had convinced herself that she had won.

She had buried Emily Carter’s name.

She had buried the evidence.

She had buried the night everything happened.

But she had forgotten one thing.

Emily had always been smarter than people thought.

And Emily had prepared for the day someone tried to silence her.

Victoria stared at the document in Daniel Cross’s hand.

“Give me that.”

Her voice was no longer confident.

Daniel held it higher.

“Why?”

“Because it’s private.”

Daniel laughed quietly.

“Private?”

He looked around the crowded boutique.

“My sister disappeared. A seven-year-old child was dragged across a marble floor because you wanted this bag. And now you’re worried about privacy?”

The people around them began recording on their phones.

Victoria noticed.

Her reputation.

Her perfect image.

Everything she had built was collapsing in front of strangers.

She quickly turned toward the crowd.

“This is a family matter. Please leave.”

Nobody moved.

Because everyone wanted to see what happened next.

The woman who had always looked untouchable was finally being exposed.

Daniel looked down at Lily.

“Did your mother ever tell you anything about your father?”

Lily shook her head.

“She said he loved me.”

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

“She was lying.”

The entire room turned toward her.

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“You should be careful with your words.”

Victoria ignored him.

“Emily was unstable. She created stories. She wanted attention.”

Lily looked hurt.

“My mommy never lied.”

Victoria looked at the child.

And for a moment, something almost like guilt appeared in her eyes.

Almost.

Then it disappeared.

“You don’t know who your mother really was.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“And you do?”

Victoria remained silent.

That silence was an answer.

Daniel noticed.

Seven years ago, when Emily disappeared, Victoria had always claimed she barely knew her.

A casual acquaintance.

A distant friend.

Nothing more.

But now…

A photograph showed them together.

A recording named Victoria.

And a hidden file suggested she knew about Lily’s father.

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“You weren’t just involved.”

Victoria looked at him.

“You have no proof.”

Daniel smiled.

“Not yet.”

That word frightened her.

Not yet.

Because Daniel Cross had a reputation.

He didn’t accuse people without evidence.

He collected every piece.

Every mistake.

Every lie.

And Victoria had made plenty.

Three hours later, the story had spread across the city.

“Socialite Victoria Hale Accused in Seven-Year Mystery.”

The headline appeared on every news website.

Victoria sat inside the backseat of her luxury car, staring at her phone.

Her husband, Richard Hale, was calling repeatedly.

She ignored him.

She couldn’t talk to Richard.

Not yet.

Because if Richard found out what was inside that bag…

Her marriage would be over.

Her fortune would disappear.

And the Hale family name would be destroyed forever.

The driver glanced at the mirror.

“Mrs. Hale?”

“What?”

“Are you alright?”

Victoria looked out the window.

For years, people had feared her.

But now she was the one afraid.

Because Lily Carter was not just Emily’s daughter.

She was something much more dangerous.

She was proof.

That night, Daniel brought Lily to his apartment.

The little girl sat quietly on the sofa, holding the old handbag.

Daniel placed a blanket around her.

“You must be tired.”

Lily nodded.

“Uncle Daniel?”

“Yes?”

“Why did that woman hate my mommy?”

Daniel froze.

Because he didn’t know how to answer.

The truth was complicated.

Emily had never been someone who made enemies easily.

She was kind.

Patient.

The type of person who apologized even when someone else hurt her.

But seven years ago, something changed.

Emily discovered something about the Hale family.

Something she was willing to risk everything to reveal.

Daniel sat beside Lily.

“Your mother loved you very much.”

Lily looked down.

“She said my daddy was important.”

Daniel frowned.

“Did she tell you his name?”

Lily shook her head.

“No. She said if I knew too soon, bad people would find me.”

Daniel’s heart sank.

Bad people.

Those were not words a mother used without reason.

“Did she leave you anything else?”

Lily thought for a moment.

Then slowly reached into her pocket.

“I have this.”

She pulled out a small golden key.

Daniel stared at it.

“Where did you get that?”

“My mommy gave it to me before she disappeared.”

Daniel took the key carefully.

There was a tiny symbol engraved on it.

A symbol he recognized immediately.

The Hale family crest.

His face changed.

Because this key didn’t belong to Emily.

It belonged to Victoria’s family.

“What does it open?” Lily asked.

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

Seven years ago, before Emily vanished, she had been investigating the Hale family’s private records.

And the key belonged to a locked vault.

A vault hidden beneath the Hale estate.

Meanwhile, across the city, Victoria entered her mansion.

Richard was waiting.

“You’re all over the news.”

Victoria said nothing.

Richard stepped closer.

“What did you do?”

She looked at him.

For the first time in their marriage, Richard saw fear in her eyes.

“There’s a problem.”

“What problem?”

Victoria slowly removed her coat.

“Emily Carter’s daughter is alive.”

Richard froze.

The silence between them was terrifying.

Then he whispered:

“That’s impossible.”

Victoria looked at him.

“You said you handled it.”

Richard’s face changed.

A dangerous expression appeared.

“You promised me the child would never come back.”

Victoria stared at him.

And in that moment, she understood.

She had spent seven years protecting Richard.

But now she realized something.

Richard wasn’t protecting her.

He was protecting himself.

“Where is she?” he asked.

Victoria didn’t answer.

“Victoria.”

His voice became colder.

“Where is Emily’s daughter?”

Victoria looked toward the window.

Outside, the city lights glittered.

But all she could see was the past coming back.

And this time…

It wasn’t coming for Emily.

It was coming for them.

May you like

Because the little girl they tried to erase…

Was carrying the key to their destruction.
