Chapter 9: The Blue Room

For fifteen years, I had imagined what I would say if Claire somehow returned.
I had imagined anger.
Questions.
Accusations.
Instead, when she stepped into the light, I forgot every word.
She looked at Lily first.
“My baby.”
Lily crossed the distance between them.
Claire caught her in both arms.
Neither spoke for several seconds.
They simply held each other while the archive mechanism continued turning beneath the floor.
When Claire finally looked at me, her eyes carried fifteen years of grief.
“Arthur.”
I wanted to embrace her.
I also wanted to demand an explanation for every birthday, funeral, and lonely night she had missed.
There was no time for either.
“Why did you say Lily was the key?”
“To confuse Kane.”
“Then what did you transfer into her medical records?”
“A false biometric profile. I needed him to believe she could open the archive.”
Mara stepped closer.
“You allowed Kane to pursue your daughter.”
“I gave Richard a false trail three years ago after he began investigating Lily’s inheritance. I never expected him to marry her.”
Lily pulled back.
“You knew he was watching me?”
Claire’s face tightened.
“I watched him too.”
“And you never warned me?”
“If I made contact, Kane would know I was alive.”
“He knew anyway.”
“Not until Richard found Project Lantern.”
The blue room opened beneath us.
Inside were rows of sealed servers, paper archives, financial ledgers, recordings, and physical evidence gathered during Claire’s years as a source.
The collection could dismantle the entire network.
Daniel Cross emerged from behind a storage cabinet.
His left shoulder was bleeding.
“Reunion later,” he said. “Kane entered through the eastern tunnel.”
I looked at the man whose funeral I had attended without a body.
“You used my authentication code.”
“To move Claire after her location was compromised.”
“You made her believe she could never contact us.”
“No. Kane did that after he took control of the relocation.”
Claire stepped between us.
“Daniel saved my life.”
“And destroyed ours.”
“He thought you were compromised,” she said.
“Because he forged evidence making me look compromised.”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“Kane ordered me to use your code. I did not understand why until it was too late.”
A warning light flashed across the archive.
Someone was copying the servers remotely.
Mara rushed toward the control station.
“Kane is transferring the files.”
“Can you stop it?” I asked.
“Not without shutting down the archive.”
Claire pressed her hand against a biometric reader.
The transfer stopped at sixty-two percent.
Then the lights died.
A shot echoed through the darkness.
Daniel fell.
Mara pulled Lily behind a concrete column.
Emergency lighting turned red.
Samuel Kane’s voice came through the archive speakers.
“Arthur, you always believed corruption could be removed like a tumor.”
His voice seemed to come from everywhere.
“But corruption is not a disease.”
A steel door began closing between Claire and me.
“It is the body.”
I lunged forward, but the door slammed down.
Claire and Lily were trapped on one side.
Mara and I were trapped on the other.
Then Kane spoke again.
“Choose carefully, Arthur. You can save the evidence…”
May you like
A ventilation system roared above Claire and Lily.
“Or you can save your family.”
