Chapter 6 - The Velvet TrapThe trap sprung on Thursday night.

We had successfully leaked the financial audit of Moretti’s shell company to the local media and the federal prosecutor’s office, effectively neutralizing the threat against Pier 14 before the Friday vote. To celebrate, Matteo insisted on hosting a quiet, private dinner in the estate’s main dining room.

Just the two of us.

I wore a sleek, emerald-green silk dress that Mrs. Gable had mysteriously left in my closet—a dress that hugged my waist and made my collarbones stand out in the candlelight. Across the mahogany table, Matteo wore a black cashmere turtleneck under an unbuttoned blazer, looking less like a syndicate boss and more like a man I could actually imagine having a normal conversation with.

We laughed over wine. We debated the best pizza spots in Boston. For a few hours, the bullets, the safehouse guards, and the mafia war felt like a distant, impossible movie.

“To professional espionage,” Matteo toasted, raising his crystal glass of red wine across the table.

I clinked my glass against his with a bright smile. “To staying out of federal prison.”

As the evening wound down, Matteo walked me out to the terrace doors, the snow falling softly against the glass outside. The warmth of the room wrapped around us like a blanket, but the tension between us had grown thick, palpable, and charged with electricity.

“Chloe,” Matteo began softly, his voice dropping into that low, intimate register. He stepped closer, the back of his hand gently brushing against my knuckles. “When I brought you here... I thought I was just keeping you safe.”

My breath hitched. “And now?”

“Now,” he whispered, his slate-grey eyes burning with an intensity that made my knees weak, “I can't imagine my life without you walking into my office and yelling at me.”

He reached up, his fingers sliding gently into my hair, cupping the back of my neck as he leaned down. When his lips met mine, the kiss wasn't rough or demanding. It was slow, warm, and devastatingly tender—a surrender of armor and secrets.

My hands curled into the lapels of his blazer, pulling him closer as the world outside faded into the snow.

Suddenly, the glass shatter of a high-velocity sniper round blowing through the terrace window shattered the night.

“Get down!” Matteo roared, tackling me to the marble floor just as a second bullet embedded itself into the mahogany dining table where we had been sitting two seconds earlier.

Alarms wailed across the estate. Red emergency strobes flashed through the hallways.

Matteo shielded my body with his own, his hand instinctively drawing the Sig Sauer from his shoulder holster.

“Leo!” Matteo bellowed into his comms link, his voice lethal. “Status!”

“Boss, we’ve got multiple intruders breaching the western perimeter!” Leo’s voice barked back over the radio, punctuated by the sharp crack of automatic gunfire in the distance. “It’s Moretti’s cleanup crew! They’re hitting the main house!”

Matteo looked down at me, his face a mask of cold, terrifying fury.

“Stay behind me,” he ordered, pulling me up by the hand.

“I’m not hiding,” I said, my voice shaking with adrenaline, not fear. “You taught me how to fight back. Let’s finish this.”
