Chapter 18 - The Assembly in the ShadowsThorne retreated, but the victory was brief and fragile as a glass thread.

By nightfall, the city of Oakhaven was placed under a soft, suffocating siege. The Guild of the Golden Needle had used its vast political influence to shut down the main railway line into Vance Manor. Telegram wires were cut, and municipal police officers set up wooden barricades along the high road leading up the valley.

Inside the manor’s warm library, a fire crackled in the massive stone hearth.

Julian sat on the floor near the hearth, holding a small brass knife, carving a piece of pine wood into a small toy bird for Aunt Martha. Evangeline sat beside him on the rug, her fingers tracing the smooth grain of the wood, while Arthur, Doctor Sterling, and Marcus—the chief of Arthur’s railway security—stood around the mahogany desk covered in maps of the city.

"They've blocked the Blackwood Bridge," Marcus reported, pointing a thick finger at the map. "Thorne has bribed the Mayor. They know they can't storm the manor by force without a full military detachment, so they plan to starve us out. In three days, our coal supply for the steam generators will run dry."

"Then we don't stay here," Julian said softly.

Everyone in the room stopped and looked down at the ten-year-old boy.

Julian set his carving knife down on the rug. He looked up, his grey eyes shining with a strange, fierce clarity in the firelight.

"Thorne wants me because he thinks my power belongs in a glass bottle," Julian said, his voice quiet but echoing with profound authority. "He thinks he can lock the Life-Thread in a vault. But Aunt Martha told us the truth. The Keepers didn't hide in castles. They lived among the people."

Evangeline reached out, taking his hand. "What are you thinking, Julian?"

"The South Ward," Julian whispered, turning his head toward Arthur. "The coal miners, the dockers, the factory workers... they hate the Guild. The Guild charges them three months' wages just to set a broken bone, and if they can't pay, they let them rot in the shanty town."

Arthur’s eyes narrowed thoughtfully. "You want to go into the slums?"

"If we stay behind these granite walls, Thorne will use the law to crush us," Julian said, standing up on his small leather boots. "But if we go into the city... if we open a free clinic in the South Ward and teach the people that they don't have to die in the cold... the Guild won't be able to touch us. The whole city will rise up to protect us."

Doctor Sterling gasped, his spectacles slipping down his nose. "Open a clinic in the slums?! Julian, you can't heal ten thousand people! You'll die of exhaustion in a week!"

"I won't heal them all myself," Julian said, turning his pale face toward Evangeline with a warm, radiant smile. "I'm going to teach Evangeline."
