Chapter 19 - The Awakening SparkThe library went completely dead silent.

Doctor Sterling stared at Julian as if the boy had suddenly spoken in an ancient, dead language. Arthur Vance froze, his glass of whiskey hovering inches from his lips.

"Teach... me?" Evangeline breathed, her blue eyes wide with pure shock. "Julian... I don't have the spark. I was broken!"

"You were broken," Julian corrected gently, kneeling down beside her and taking both of her small, warm hands in his. "But when you saved my life two nights ago... when my heart stopped beating and Doctor Sterling gave up on me... you didn't just give me back my breath, Evangeline. You pulled the thread yourself."

He closed his eyes and released a tiny, glowing thread of golden light into her palms.

Evangeline gasped as the familiar, sweet warmth flooded her arms. But this time, she didn't just absorb it.

Instead of letting the golden heat settle into her bones, she closed her eyes, focused her mind on the image of her father standing by the desk, and breathed out.

A tiny, brilliant spark of golden light—no larger than a pinhead, but burning with a pure, undeniable radiance—leaped from her index finger and hovered in the air between her hands for three full seconds before vanishing into the quiet air.

Doctor Sterling dropped his leather notebook. It slammed onto the hardwood floor with a sharp thud.

"By the heavens..." Sterling whispered, falling back into a leather armchair, his jaw hanging open. "It's... it's not a genetic anomaly. It's a transferable discipline..."

Arthur Vance dropped to his knees beside his daughter, staring at her glowing fingers with tears welling in his dark, iron eyes.

"Evangeline..." Arthur choked out.

"It's inside everyone," Julian explained softly, looking up at the towering lord. "The rich, the poor, the lords, and the beggars. The Keepers didn't hold a secret power, sir. They just remembered how to care for one another when the world went cold. The Guild wants to turn medicine into gold. We are going to turn it back into hope."

Arthur looked at the two children sitting on the rug—a street beggar who had lost everything to the winter, and a railway heiress who had lost her mother to the snow. They held hands, two small embers standing together against an empire of iron and dark stone.

The iron lord stood up. He walked over to his mahogany desk, picked up a heavy brass bell, and rang it sharply.

Thomas opened the library door instantly. "Yes, My Lord?"

"Thomas," Arthur Vance commanded, his voice echoing with a power greater than any railway empire he had ever built. "Prepare the heavy iron steam-locomotive in the lower yard. Load three coal cars, forty boxes of medical supplies, and arm every railway security officer we have."

Thomas blinked. "Where are we heading, sir?"

Arthur Vance adjusted his coat, looking at Julian and Evangeline with fierce, unyielding pride.

"We are going to the South Ward," Arthur declared. "We're going to build a hospital."
