Chapter 2: The Cold Awakening

The shattering of the champagne glass against the hardwood floor of the master bedroom sounded exactly like the breaking of a bone.

Dominic stood frozen beside the king-sized mattress, his face drained of every ounce of its usual arrogant color. The phone rested face-up on the tangled sheets, the glow of my final text message casting a sickening blue light against his trembling hands: "Enjoy the family you chose."

"Dominic? Honey, what’s wrong?" Paige asked, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness as she sat up, wrapping the silk duvet around her bare shoulders. She reached out to touch his arm, her manicured nails catching the lamplight. "What did the doctor say? Is that dramatic little orphan finally out of our lives for good?"

Dominic didn't answer. He couldn't. His throat felt as if it had been filled with broken glass. The words of Dr. Reed were echoing through his skull like a death sentence: She lost the baby. You are sterile.

"Dominic!" Paige snapped, her irritation breaking through her sweet facade. "You're scaring me. Say something."

"Get out," Dominic whispered, his voice dangerously low, hollowed out by a sudden, paralyzing terror.

"What?"

"I said, get the hell out of my house!" he roared, turning on her with a fury that made her flinch back against the headboard. "Get your clothes and leave! Right now!"

Terrified by the sudden shift in the man she had spent months manipulating, Paige scrambled out of the bed, gathered her designer dress from the floor, and fled into the hallway.

The moment the front door clicked shut, Dominic dropped to his knees, his hands clawing at his hair. A baby. Audrey had been carrying his child—the heir his mother had spent three years demanding, the legacy he had desperately wanted to cement his status in the high-society circles of the city. And it was gone. Cut down because his mother had pushed her down the stairs, and he had been too busy celebrating my "departure" to check if I was still breathing.

But the second part of the doctor's call was a deeper, more lethal blade. Sterile. The fertility evaluation he had secretly taken weeks ago, convinced that my failure to conceive was proof of my "weak genetics," had returned an absolute truth. He would never father a child. The baby Audrey had been carrying was his one and only chance to ever hold his own blood. And his family had killed it.

His phone buzzed violently on the mattress. It wasn't me. It was Victoria.

"Dominic, darling," his mother’s smooth, aristocratic voice poured through the speaker. "I just saw that little tramp's car is missing from the driveway. Did she finally pack her thrift-store rags and leave? Good riddance. We can finally list that downtown condo she liked so much and use the capital for your company's new concrete contract."

"Mother," Dominic choked out, his chest heaving. "Audrey was pregnant."

A brief, sharp silence fell over the line. Then, Victoria let out a dismissive, elegant chuckle. "Oh, please, Dominic. Don't fall for her pathetic lies. She's just saying that to guilt you into—"

"She miscarried at Northwestern Memorial after you pushed her down the stairs, Mother!" Dominic screamed into the receiver, tears finally spilling over his eyelids. "And the doctor just called with my results. I’m sterile. I can never have children. You killed the only grandchild you will ever have!"

Victoria gasped, the sound ragged and sharp. "Dominic... no, that's impossible. The doctor must be mistaken. We can buy another opinion. We have the Sterling name, we have the money—"

"We don't have anything!" Dominic wept, staring at the empty bedroom that suddenly felt like a tomb.

He didn't know how right he was. Because while he was crying on the floor of our bedroom, Sophia Sterling was standing in the server room of Vanguard Holdings, executing the financial kill-switch I had authorized with a single stroke of a pen.
