Chapter 3: The Eviction of an Empire

At precisely 8:00 a.m. the following morning, Dominic arrived at the corporate headquarters of Sterling Construction. He hadn't slept. His eyes were bloodshot, his suit wrinkled, his mind entirely consumed by a desperate plan to find me, beg for forgiveness, and promise to put his mother in a home if I would just come back.

But when he stepped into the glass lobby, he was met by a wall of unfamiliar security guards wearing the black uniforms of Vanguard Holdings.

"Mr. Sterling," the lead guard said, stepping forward to block the executive elevators. "You are requested in the main boardroom immediately."

"Get out of my way," Dominic snapped, trying to summon his usual executive authority. "I own this building. I don't need an invitation to my own boardroom."

"Actually, sir, you don't," a cold, sharp voice interrupted.

Sophia Sterling stepped out from behind the marble pillars, her pinstripe suit immaculate, a thick leather portfolio tucked under her arm. Beside her stood two forensic accountants and a representative from the city’s housing authority.

"What is the meaning of this, Sophia?" Dominic demanded, his hands tightening into fists. "If this is about Audrey’s divorce, tell her to come see me herself. I'm not playing games with her low-rent legal team."

"Audrey doesn't wish to see you, Dominic. In fact, she has a permanent order of protection against both you and your mother, signed by a federal judge at midnight," Sophia said, sliding a document across the reception desk. "But more importantly, I'm not here as her divorce lawyer. I'm here as the chief legal counsel for Vanguard Holdings."

Dominic scoffed, though a cold knot of dread began to form in his stomach. "Vanguard? The holding company that handles our primary equity? What do they have to do with my marriage?"

"Vanguard Holdings doesn't just handle your equity, Dominic," Sophia said, a small, predatory smile touching her lips. "Vanguard is your company. Two years ago, when your business was collapsing from your mother's reckless spending, a silent investor purchased sixty-two percent of Sterling Construction through a private trust. That investor also purchased the deed to your Cherry Hills mansion, leased your luxury vehicles, and established the line of credit that keeps your daily operations alive."

Sophia stepped closer, her eyes flashing with a fierce, absolute satisfaction.

"The silent investor... is Audrey."

The air left Dominic's lungs in a violent rush. He staggered back against the glass doors of the lobby, his mind spinning so fast he felt dizzy. Audrey? The quiet girl who wore ten-dollar dresses? The orphan who cooked his mother's meals and quietly accepted their insults without a word?

"No," Dominic breathed, shaking his head frantically. "No, she’s poor. Her father was a nobody. She didn't have a dime."

"Her father was Arthur Brooks, the founder of the international steel conglomerate that built half the infrastructure in the Midwest," Sophia corrected coldly. "He left her a private trust worth eighty million dollars. She lived simply because she wanted a marriage based on love, not leverage. But you and your mother preferred a victim. So, today, you get to see what happens when the victim walks away."

Sophia opened her portfolio and handed a stack of flashing red notifications to the forensic accountant.

"As of 8:01 a.m., Vanguard Holdings has frozen all operational bank accounts connected to Sterling Construction. The lines of credit are revoked. The leases on your luxury vehicles have been cancelled, and repossession teams are currently towing your Porsche from the executive garage."

"You can't do this!" Dominic screamed, his voice cracking as several employees began to gather in the lobby, whispering in shock. "It's marital property! It has to go through the courts!"

"The trust was established five years before your marriage, Dominic. It is entirely shielded," Sophia countered. "And as for your house... the housing authority representative beside me is currently serving an immediate, unconditional eviction notice on your mother at the Cherry Hills estate. The property is owned by Vanguard, and the tenant has been deemed a physical hazard due to felony domestic assault."

"Sophia, please!" Dominic fell to his knees right there on the marble floor, the exact same way I had fallen down the stairs twenty-four hours ago. "Tell her I'm sorry! Tell her I didn't know about the baby! I'll give her the company! I'll give her everything!"

"You have nothing to give her, Dominic," Sophia said, turning her back on him as the security guards stepped forward to escort him from the building. "You’ve already spent everything that mattered."
