Chapter 11 - The Saturday EvictionAt 8:55 AM on Saturday, the bright morning sun beat down on the brick courtyard outside my building. I stood near the main entrance wearing dark jeans and a plain black sweater, holding a takeaway coffee cup. Beside me stood two uniformed Maricopa County sheriff’s deputies and a locksmith holding a heavy metal tool bag.

Greg, the concierge, stepped out to unlock the lobby doors for us, offering me a look of quiet, sympathetic support. "He hasn't come down since Thursday night, Maya. His mother came by yesterday afternoon to drop off groceries, but security turned her away per your instructions."

"Thank you, Greg," I said softly.

We rode the elevator up to the third floor in total silence. The quiet click-clack of the locksmith's tools was the only sound breaking the stillness.

When we reached Unit 3B, Deputy Vance stepped forward and knocked hard on the heavy oak door.

"Maricopa County Sheriff's Office! Opening the door per court order for Exclusive Possession!"

Silence inside.

Deputy Vance knocked again, louder this time. "Garrett Cole, step away from the door. We have an order signed by Judge Miller. We are entering."

From inside, I heard a hurried scuffle of footsteps, followed by Garrett’s muffled, panicked voice. "You can't come in here! This is my residence! My lawyer is filing an appeal!"

"Sir, this is an emergency court order," Deputy Vance called out, his voice calm, firm, and completely devoid of emotion. "You have sixty seconds to open the door, or the locksmith will drill the lock."

"I'm calling my mother!" Garrett yelled back.

Deputy Vance didn't waste time. He gestured to the locksmith.

The low, metallic whir of the power drill cut through the hallway air. Within forty seconds, the deadbolt yielded with a heavy snap. The deputy turned the handle and pushed the door open.

Garrett was standing in the center of the living room in sweatpants and a rumpled t-shirt, clutching his phone, his hair unwashed and eyes wild. The apartment was a disaster—takeout boxes littered my glass coffee table, unwashed dishes filled the sink, and clothes were strewn across my light oak floors.

"Garrett Cole?" Deputy Vance asked, stepping inside while his partner stood by the door.

"This is illegal!" Garrett shouted, pointing a trembling finger at me. "She’s doing this out of malice! She locked me out of our bank accounts, and now she’s bringing cops to my home!"

Deputy Vance pulled a folded document from his tactical vest and held it out. "Sir, this is Judge Miller’s order granting Maya Lin exclusive use and occupancy of this real estate, effective immediately. You have fifteen minutes to gather your wallet, phone, keys, and immediate personal medication."

"Fifteen minutes?!" Garrett gasped, looking around the cluttered apartment in utter panic. "My clothes! My suits! My golf clubs!"

May you like

"Arrangements for your remaining personal property will be scheduled through your attorney," the deputy said, looking at his watch. "Fourteen minutes, sir."

Garrett looked at me, hoping to find a flicker of hesitation or guilt in my eyes. He found only the quiet, cold resolve of someone who had already moved on.
