Chapter 20 - The Quiet AccountOn a cool, clear Sunday evening in November, I returned home from a weekend trip to Santa Fe.

I unlocked the smart deadbolt of Unit 3B with a soft electronic chime, set my leather duffel bag in the entryway, and turned on the soft accent lamps scattered across the living room.

The apartment was spotless, warm, and fragrant with the subtle scent of fresh eucalyptus and cedar.

I made a cup of chamomile tea, walked over to my quiet corner desk in the library room, and opened the middle drawer.

Sitting inside was the dark leather planner from two years ago—the one containing the sentence I had written on a desperate, anxious night before my thirty-first birthday.

I pulled out a fine-point black gel pen, turned to the very back page of the book, and wrote underneath the old entry:

Thirty-three today.

The home is mine. The peace is mine. The future is mine.

The account is balanced.

I closed the planner, placed it back into the drawer, and pushed it shut with a quiet, satisfying click.

I walked out onto my balcony with my warm mug, leaning against the clean glass railing. The city lights of Phoenix stretched out into the desert horizon, sparkling under a vast, dark sky.

I smiled, took a sip of tea, and listened to the sweetest sound in the entire world:

The perfect, unbroken quiet of my own home.
