Several weeks later, Daniel visited Elena in the small apartment she rented on the edge of town.
She looked embarrassed when he thanked her.
"I only did what anyone should have done."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
"You stayed."
"You risked your job."
"You risked your safety."
"You protected my mother when I wasn't here."
Elena smiled sadly.
"I lost my parents when I was seventeen."
"When I met your mother... she reminded me of them."
Daniel finally opened the blue sewing box.
Inside were dozens of letters.
One letter was addressed directly to him.
"My dear Daniel,
If you're reading this, then Elena kept her promise.
She has cared for me like a daughter.
Never judge people by their titles.
Sometimes family is the person who chooses to protect you when they have every reason to walk away."
