Chapter 3: The Return

Then, the heavy front door clicked open.

Jonathan stepped inside, carrying an expensive leather briefcase after another grueling fourteen-hour day at the corporate firm. He was a successful businessman, a man whose word commanded boardrooms across the city. He took only a couple of steps into the foyer before suddenly freezing in his tracks.

The sound of the city outside disappeared. The corporate stress melted away. Everything around him vanished.

His eyes locked onto the scene unfolding directly in front of him in his own living room.

His elderly mother—the woman who had spent her entire life sacrificing her youth, her health, and her very breath so he could stand where he was today—was kneeling on the cold marble floor.

Massaging his wife's feet.

For several seconds, Jonathan couldn't breathe. His chest tightened as if struck by a physical blow. His fingers slowly loosened around the leather handle of his briefcase until it slipped entirely from his grip and landed heavily on the marble floor with a dull, echoing thud.

The sound reverberated through the silent, cavernous mansion.

Both women snapped their heads toward the entrance.

Jonathan's voice barely came out, raspy and hollow.

"Mom..."

He stared at her in utter disbelief, his eyes widening in horror.

"What are you doing?"

Martha couldn't bring herself to meet her son's eyes. Ashamed, embarrassed, and completely broken down by the humiliation, she quietly lowered her head even further toward the floor.

Her answer was almost too soft to hear over the hum of the air conditioner.

"She said... I had to earn dinner."
