CHAPTER 11: The Counter-Strike

I scrambled back to my father’s position as Marcus and his security detail returned suppressing fire.

“I have the drive,” I told my father, holding up the flash drive.

Richard looked at me with a mix of pride and fierce determination. “Then it’s time to end this. Marcus, activate the localized EMP pulse.”

Marcus pulled a heavy black case from the back of the SUV, flipped a switch, and slammed down a red lever.

A high-frequency hum vibrated through the air, followed by a sharp bang.

Instantly, all electronic devices within a two-hundred-yard radius died. The headlights of the enemy armored truck went dark, their weapons jammed, and the night was plunged into pitch-black shadow.

“Move! Now!” Marcus ordered.

We rushed into my father’s reinforced vehicle—which operated on a shielded diesel engine unaffected by the EMP—and sped away from the docks, leaving the blinded Apex operatives behind in the darkness.

Inside the back seat, Adrian sat huddled in the corner, staring at his useless phone.

“What about Vanessa?” Adrian asked softly, his voice trembling.

I looked at him with cold pity. “Vanessa is already in federal custody. She was arrested an hour ago for economic espionage. Your child, if she’s even pregnant, will be born in a federal penitentiary.”

Adrian covered his face with his hands and began to sob quietly.

I turned to my father. “Now, Dad... you and I are going to have a real conversation about Project Aegis.”
