Chapter 17 - The Unsolicited InquiryBy the spring of the following year, Sterling Creative Studio had expanded beyond our home in Baltimore into a renovated loft space in the historic harbor district. Chloe had hired two full-time junior designers and a studio manager.

One afternoon, while I was organizing the studio's archival records, Chloe’s studio manager, Sarah, walked into the private office holding a heavy wax-sealed envelope.

"This came by registered courier from New York," Sarah said, placing it on Chloe’s desk. "It's marked urgent and confidential."

Chloe picked up the heavy bone-colored paper. The return address read: Vanguard Global Hospitality Group, Manhattan.

Vanguard was one of the premier luxury hotel and restaurant development firms in North America. They managed boutique properties across Paris, London, Tokyo, and New York.

Chloe broke the seal and pulled out a thick parchment letter accompanied by a formal retainer brief.

Dear Ms. Sterling,

Our board has recently acquired the assets of several distressed dining establishments in the Southeast region, including the former site of 'The Hearth' in Atlanta.

We are completely re-concepting the property into a high-end, chef-driven establishment focused on sustainable local cuisine. We are aware of the dark history associated with the location and its former operator.

We do not want to erase that history; we want to redeem it. We are offering you complete artistic freedom, a $300,000 design budget, and a ten-percent equity stake in the venue's brand identity to completely redesign the space, the visual architecture, and the culinary identity from the ground up.

Show them what true craft looks like.

Chloe handed the letter to me. Her hands were perfectly still.

"They want you to go back to Atlanta," I said quietly, reading the terms.

"They want me to rebuild the place where he tried to break me," Chloe corrected, her voice thoughtful. She walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the blue waters of the harbor. "Two years ago, the thought of stepping foot in that building would have paralyzed me."

May you like

"And now?" I asked.

Chloe turned around, her eyes clear and unburdened. "Now, it's just a building made of brick and mortar. And he doesn't own a single brick."
