Chapter 10: The Night Everything Exploded

Chapter 10: The Night Everything Exploded
Thomas Grant didn't follow the photographer.
Not immediately.
Instead, he watched the man disappear into the evening crowd before quietly sending every photo and video he had captured to Michael.
Target identified.
Male. Approximately 35 years old.
Professional surveillance techniques.
Will begin tracking immediately.
Michael looked up from his phone.
Across the picnic table, Lily was laughing as Ethan carefully fed the last piece of bread to a duck.
For one brief hour, they had looked like an ordinary family.
Now reality had returned.
Thomas's message confirmed one terrifying fact.
Someone was still watching them.
That night, the Carter mansion felt different.
The estate's security had doubled.
Additional cameras had been installed.
Every entrance was monitored.
David Reynolds personally supervised the guards.
Still, Michael couldn't shake the feeling that danger hadn't passed.
It had only changed.
At eight o'clock, Richard Bennett arrived carrying another folder.
"We have good news."
Michael looked up.
"Tell me."
"The judge signed the temporary protection order."
"What about Vanessa?"
"She's prohibited from contacting the children."
Michael nodded.
"And..."
Richard hesitated.
"...she requested a supervised visit."
Michael's expression hardened.
"No."
"The court hasn't approved it."
"But she's demanding to speak with them."
Michael stood and walked toward the window.
Outside, Ethan and Lily were watching a movie with one of the housekeepers.
For the first time in weeks, they looked relaxed.
"They're not seeing her."
Richard sighed.
"I expected you'd say that."
At exactly nine-thirty, the front gate alarm sounded.
David's voice came over the intercom.
"Sir."
Michael immediately answered.
"What happened?"
"Mrs. Carter is here."
Michael's eyes narrowed.
"She isn't allowed on the property."
"She says she only wants five minutes."
Richard stood.
"I'll call the police."
Before anyone could move, another voice echoed through the intercom.
Vanessa.
"Michael!"
"Please!"
"I need to explain!"
Her voice sounded desperate.
Broken.
Michael remained silent.
Then another sound came through the speakers.
A child's scream.
"Daddy!"
Lily.
Michael's heart nearly stopped.
He ran toward the family room.
Lily had frozen in front of the security monitor.
On the screen, Vanessa was pounding both fists against the front gate.
She wasn't crying anymore.
She was furious.
"You can't keep them from me!"
"They're my family!"
Lily began shaking uncontrollably.
Ethan instinctively stepped in front of his little sister.
Michael immediately turned off the monitor.
"It's okay."
"They're safe."
He knelt beside them.
"No one is getting inside."
Outside the estate...
Vanessa's behavior grew more erratic.
Security cameras recorded everything.
She screamed at the guards.
Accused Michael of kidnapping.
Demanded the children be brought outside immediately.
Several neighbors began gathering near the entrance.
Cell phones appeared.
People started recording.
David quietly informed Michael,
"Local reporters are arriving."
Richard cursed under his breath.
"She planned this."
Michael nodded.
"She wants a public scene."
Exactly.
If she couldn't win in court...
She would try to win in public opinion.
Twenty minutes later, two police cruisers arrived.
Officer Melissa Grant approached Vanessa.
"Mrs. Carter."
"You've been ordered to remain away from this property."
Vanessa immediately burst into tears.
"My husband stole my children."
"I've done nothing wrong."
The performance was flawless.
Had Michael never seen the hidden camera footage...
He might have believed her himself.
Officer Grant calmly replied,
"Please step away from the gate."
Vanessa suddenly pointed toward the mansion.
"He poisoned them against me!"
"He wants all my money!"
Michael watched through the security monitor.
He almost admired how quickly she could transform.
Victim.
Mother.
Loving wife.
Every role arrived on cue.
Until she made one mistake.
Lily quietly walked into the room.
"Daddy..."
Michael gently pulled her back.
"You shouldn't watch."
But Lily looked toward the monitor anyway.
The moment Vanessa's face appeared...
She screamed.
"No!"
"Please don't let her in!"
The terrified cry echoed through the room.
Every police officer outside heard it through the open intercom.
Officer Grant looked toward the mansion.
Then back at Vanessa.
"Why would a child react like that?"
Vanessa froze.
Only for a second.
But the hesitation was enough.
Officer Grant noticed.
So did the cameras.
Outside, reporters began asking questions.
"Mrs. Carter!"
"Have you been accused of child abuse?"
"Is it true police recovered surveillance footage?"
"Did you physically discipline the children?"
Vanessa's smile vanished.
"This is a conspiracy."
"My husband hired actors."
"He manipulated evidence."
Another reporter shouted,
"What about the bruises?"
Vanessa lost her temper.
"They bruise easily!"
"They're dramatic!"
"They always cry!"
The microphones captured every word.
Live.
Unedited.
Richard quietly smiled.
"She just destroyed her own public image."
Michael wasn't smiling.
He only watched.
His children had heard enough insults from her.
They didn't need to hear any more.
An hour later, the police finally escorted Vanessa away from the estate.
As her car disappeared down the driveway, silence returned.
Michael believed the worst was over.
He was wrong.
At exactly 11:47 p.m., David burst into the study.
His face was pale.
"Sir."
"What happened?"
"The surveillance team caught someone."
Michael stood immediately.
"Where?"
"Behind the east garden."
"Trying to climb the wall."
Minutes later, security officers brought the intruder into the mansion.
He was the same photographer Thomas had seen at the park.
His backpack lay open on the floor.
Inside were:
Two cameras.
Night-vision binoculars.
A laptop.
Three burner phones.
And a thick envelope.
Thomas arrived almost simultaneously.
"I know him."
Michael looked up.
"The man from the park."
Thomas nodded.
"His name is Eric Dalton."
"A freelance surveillance specialist."
David searched the backpack more carefully.
Then he stopped.
"Sir..."
He slowly pulled out a folded blueprint.
It was a detailed map of the Carter estate.
Every room.
Every hallway.
Every security camera.
Even the children's bedrooms.
Michael stared at it in disbelief.
"Where did he get this?"
Eric remained silent.
Thomas leaned closer.
"You've been paid well."
Thomas unfolded another paper found inside the envelope.
It was a typed checklist.
Most of the items were crossed out.
✓ Michael's weekly schedule
✓ Children's school routine
✓ Security guard rotations
Only one item remained unchecked.
At the bottom of the page, written in bold letters, were five chilling words:
Retrieve the Carter Technology Files.
Michael's blood ran cold.
He looked at Thomas.
"This was never just about my family."
Thomas slowly nodded.
"No."
He folded the blueprint carefully.
"Your children were the distraction."
"The real target..."
He looked directly into Michael's eyes.
"...was your company."
As police officers handcuffed Eric Dalton and led him away, Michael finally understood why Gregory Hale had said the children were never the real objective.
Vanessa hadn't simply married a wealthy man.
She had become part of a carefully planned operation.
The abuse...
The surveillance...
The manipulation...
Everything had been designed to keep Michael distracted while someone tried to steal the most valuable technology his company had ever created.
And somewhere in the city, Gregory Hale had just learned one thing.

His spy had been captured.
The game had entered its most dangerous phase.
