Chapter 8: The Investigator

Chapter 8: The Investigator
Michael stared at the bank statement for nearly a full minute.
$250,000.
Paid over six separate transfers.
Each payment had gone to the same company.
Harrison Security Consulting.
Except it wasn't a security company.
It was a private intelligence firm.
Richard Bennett slid another folder across the desk.
"I had my investigators dig a little deeper."
Michael opened it.
The company's public website was simple.
Corporate risk assessment.
Executive protection.
Business consulting.
Everything looked legitimate.
Then he turned the page.
The confidential report painted a very different picture.
"They've been sued three times for illegal surveillance," Richard said quietly.
"Two cases were settled out of court."
"The third disappeared."
Michael frowned.
"What exactly do they do?"
Richard leaned back.
"They find out where people go."
"Who they meet."
"What time they leave."
"What time they come home."
Michael slowly remembered Ethan's terrified words.
"She always knew when you'd come home."
He hadn't imagined it.
His son had been telling the truth.
That afternoon, Michael hired someone he trusted completely.
Private investigator Thomas Grant.
A former FBI agent with nearly thirty years of experience.
Thomas arrived carrying nothing except a notebook.
He didn't waste time.
"I watched the videos."
Michael nodded.
"I need answers."
Thomas sat across from him.
"Then let's start with one question."
"Who benefits if you're away from your children?"
Michael answered immediately.
"Vanessa."
Thomas shook his head.
"Think bigger."
Michael frowned.
"Bigger?"
"If someone was feeding her your schedule..."
"...they weren't doing it for free."
Silence settled over the room.
Thomas continued.
"I've investigated hundreds of family cases."
"Abuse rarely exists by itself."
"It usually hides something else."
Michael folded his arms.
"What are you suggesting?"
Thomas met his eyes.
"I'm suggesting your wife may have been preparing for something long before you discovered the truth."
The investigation began that same evening.
Thomas started with Vanessa's financial records.
Then her phone records.
Then her travel history.
Within forty-eight hours, the first surprise arrived.
Thomas entered Michael's study carrying several photographs.
"You should see these."
Michael examined the first picture.
Vanessa sat inside an expensive restaurant.
Across from her was an unfamiliar man in his early forties.
Well dressed.
Expensive watch.
Confident smile.
"They've met seven times in the last four months."
Michael looked up.
"Who is he?"
Thomas handed over another file.
"His name is Gregory Hale."
"Officially, he's a financial consultant."
Michael kept reading.
"But?"
Thomas smiled grimly.
"He also owns Harrison Security Consulting."
Michael's eyes narrowed.
"So Vanessa wasn't just hiring the company."
"No."
Thomas answered.
"She was meeting its owner."
More photographs followed.
Coffee shops.
Luxury hotels.
Private clubs.
Every meeting happened during Michael's business trips.
Never once while he was home.
"They're having an affair?"
Thomas shook his head.
"I don't know."
"But they're definitely partners."
Michael looked carefully at another photograph.
Vanessa was handing Gregory a thick envelope.
Cash.
Not documents.
Cash.
"When was this taken?"
"Three weeks ago."
"Two days before your conference in Seattle."
Michael remembered.
That had been the same week Ethan wrote in his journal:
"I counted to one thousand in the dark room today."
His jaw tightened.
While he was delivering a keynote speech to thousands of investors...
His children had been trapped inside their own home.
The next discovery was even stranger.
Thomas placed a printed map across the desk.
Red circles covered various locations throughout the city.
"What am I looking at?"
"Your movements."
Michael frowned.
"My movements?"
Thomas nodded.
"Every place you've visited over the last six months."
"The office."
"The golf club."
"The airport."
"The charity foundation."
"The hospital after your annual physical."
Michael stared at him.
"How could anyone know all this?"
Thomas pointed toward the map.
"Because someone followed you."
Every destination.
Every meeting.
Every schedule change.
Everything had been documented.
Michael felt a chill.
"This wasn't about the children."
"No."
Thomas agreed.
"This level of surveillance costs serious money."
"So why spy on me?"
Thomas remained silent for several seconds.
Then he answered.
"I think someone wanted to predict your every move."
The following morning brought another breakthrough.
David Reynolds entered the study carrying a visitor log.
"Sir..."
"I found something unusual."
Michael looked up.
"What is it?"
David pointed to several signatures.
"Gregory Hale visited the estate."
Michael frowned.
"When?"
"Twice."
"I've never met him."
"You weren't here."
David continued.
"Both visits happened while you were overseas."
"What reason did he give?"
"Home security inspection."
Michael's expression darkened.
"We've never hired him."
"No."
David nodded.
"But Mrs. Carter authorized full access."
Michael slowly stood.
"He was inside this house?"
"For nearly three hours."
Michael immediately turned toward Thomas.
"What could he have done?"
Thomas answered without hesitation.
"Installed surveillance equipment."
Within an hour, a professional electronic sweep team arrived.
They searched every room.
Every hallway.
Every office.
Three hours later, the lead technician approached Michael.
"We found something."
He held up an object no larger than a shirt button.
"A hidden microphone."
Michael stared at it.
"Where?"
"The study."
His own office.
The room where he discussed billion-dollar acquisitions.
Family finances.
Legal matters.
Everything.
The technician continued.
"And there was another."
"Where?"
"The master bedroom."
Michael's pulse quickened.
"Only two?"
The technician hesitated.
"...No."
He slowly placed four more tiny devices on the table.
"The children's playroom."
"The kitchen."
"The upstairs hallway."
"The formal dining room."
"The library."
Six listening devices.
Professionally installed.
Nearly impossible to detect.
Thomas looked at Gregory Hale's photograph.
"This wasn't child abuse anymore."
Michael nodded.
"This was espionage."
Late that evening, Thomas called again.
"I've got something."
Michael answered immediately.
"What is it?"
"I tracked Gregory's vehicle."
"And?"
"He visits one location every Friday night."
"Where?"
"A private office building downtown."
Michael grabbed his jacket.
"We're going."
Thomas stopped him.
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because tonight..."
Thomas smiled slightly.
"...someone else is already inside."
Michael frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"I have an undercover investigator."
"He planted a camera."
Michael waited.
Minutes later, Thomas's phone vibrated.
A video file appeared.
He opened it.
The footage showed Gregory entering a conference room.
A few seconds later...
Vanessa walked in.
She looked nervous.
Gregory locked the door behind them.
Michael turned up the volume.
Vanessa spoke first.
"It's over."
"He knows everything."
Gregory remained calm.
"No."
"He only knows about the children."
Michael and Thomas exchanged glances.
Then Gregory said the words that made Michael's blood run cold.
"The children were never the real objective."
The video ended abruptly.
The camera had lost signal.
Michael stared at the frozen screen.
"What does that mean?"
Thomas slowly closed the laptop.
"I don't know yet."
"But one thing is certain."
He looked directly at Michael.
"Your wife wasn't simply abusing your children."
"She was helping someone execute a much larger plan."
May you like
"And whatever that plan is..."
"...we're only beginning to uncover it."
