Chapter 4 - The Counter-OffensiveThe legal war room on the forty-eighth floor was a chaotic landscape of whiteboards, highlighters, red yarn connecting corporate structures, and exhausted attorneys working around the clock.

Marcus Sterling stood at the front of the room, tapping a pointer against a massive flowchart detailing the web of shell companies Adrian had constructed.
“With Elena Vance’s testimony and the physical ledgers she provided,” Marcus announced to the room of twenty corporate lawyers, “we have successfully frozen all of Adrian’s remaining domestic and international assets. His legal team is in complete disarray. His lead defense counsel just filed a motion to withdraw because Adrian’s retainer bounced due to insufficient funds.”
A murmur of approval rippled through the legal team.
I leaned back in my leather chair, crossing my arms. “What about his personal assets? The penthouse in downtown Boston, the luxury vehicles, the art collection?”
“All seized by the court under asset forfeiture laws,” Marcus replied with a thin smile. “By the time the federal judge finishes with him, Adrian won't even be able to afford a public defender without court approval.”
“Good,” I said coldly. “I want every civil suit filed simultaneously with the criminal indictments. I want his name stripped from every patent, every historical company credit, and every public record associated with Valeon.”
Just then, my secure desktop phone chimed.
I pressed the speaker button. “Go ahead, Maya.”
“Ms. Cross, you have an urgent call on line four from the county detention center. It’s... it’s Adrian Cross. He’s refusing to speak to anyone except you.”
The room went completely silent. Every attorney turned to look at me, waiting to see how the newly appointed CEO would handle her disgraced, incarcerated ex-husband.
I looked at Marcus, who gave me a slight, encouraging nod.
I pressed the flashing button and picked up the handset.
“Adrian,” I said, my voice smooth, even, and completely devoid of warmth. “I trust the accommodations at the county facility are meeting your expectations?”
“Claire!” Adrian’s voice crackled through the speaker, frantic, breathless, and laced with absolute panic. “Claire, you have to help me! You don't understand—they put me in maximum security holding with violent offenders! My life is in danger here! You’re my wife—you can drop the charges, you can tell the prosecutors it was all a misunderstanding!”
“We are no longer married, Adrian,” I reminded him smoothly. “The expedited divorce decree was signed by the judge this morning. You are legally, financially, and personally a stranger to me.”
“Claire, please!” he sobbed, the tough, arrogant corporate titan completely broken down into a pathetic, whimpering wreck. “I’ll give you everything! I’ll sign over all my stock options, my future earnings, anything you want! Just get me out of here!”
“You already signed everything over, Adrian,” I said quietly. “The court did it for you. Every penny you stole has been recovered, and every bridge you burned has been blown up.”
“You’re enjoying this, aren't you?” his voice suddenly shifted from pleading to venomous hatred. “You plotted this! You sat back for years playing the quiet, obedient wife just waiting to stick a knife in my back!”
May you like
“No, Adrian,” I replied, my voice hardening into steel. “I gave you every opportunity to be a partner. You chose to be a parasite. And in the business world, parasites get exterminated.”
I slammed the receiver down onto the cradle, cutting off his desperate screams.
