Chapter 5 - Rebuilding the FoundationTwo months later, Valeon Technologies was experiencing a renaissance.

With the toxic, corrupt elements thoroughly purged from executive leadership, the company’s stock had rebounded to an all-time high. Investor confidence was restored, our R&D pipeline was producing groundbreaking green-energy encryption tech, and morale across all five hundred employees was higher than it had ever been.

More importantly, I had proven that I didn't need to hide behind my father’s shadow or my husband’s coattails to command respect.

On a crisp Friday evening, my father and I stood on the grand balcony of the Vale estate overlooking the sprawling gardens where my mother’s memorial rose garden bloomed under the twilight sky.

My father handed me a glass of sparkling cider, smiling warmly.

“You know, Claire,” my father said softly, gazing out over the estate, “your mother would have been immensely proud of you. For a long time, I worried that marrying Adrian would clip your wings. I didn't realize you were simply waiting for the right moment to take flight.”

“I learned from the best, Dad,” I smiled, clinking my glass against his. “Though I admit, watching him get hauled out of the ballroom in handcuffs was a rather satisfying climax.”

“It was theatrical, I’ll give you that,” my father chuckled. “Speaking of theater... what ever happened to Miss Reed?”

“Vanessa?” I took a sip of cider. “She tried to cut a plea deal with the federal prosecutor, attempting to pin the entire embezzlement scheme on Adrian. Unfortunately for her, Elena Vance had saved every single email where Vanessa actively participated in insider trading and threatened junior staff. She’s currently facing five to eight years in federal prison right along beside him.”

My father nodded approvingly. “Justice, poetic and precise. Just like a good legal brief.”

“Speaking of legal briefs,” I said, setting my glass down on the stone railing, “I’m heading into the office tomorrow morning. We’re finalizing the acquisition of a brilliant green-tech startup in Boston run by a woman named Sarah Vance. Her compliance audits are phenomenal.”

My father laughed out loud, a rich, booming sound that echoed across the garden. “Never stop, Claire. That’s the secret. Never stop building.”
