Chapter 20 - The SanctuaryBy seven o’clock that evening, the last of the party guests had driven away down Cedar Point Road.

The estate returned to its natural, deep tranquility. The autumn twilight settled over the coastline in rich shades of plum, indigo, and deep orange, reflecting off the calm waters of the Sound.

I walked down the long, winding brick driveway toward the entrance of my property.

The high wrought-iron gates stood tall and majestic, backlit by the warm glow of the stone pillar lanterns. I reached out and touched the cool metal of the gate, feeling the solid weight of the iron structure under my fingers.

One year ago, Patricia Montgomery had stood on the street outside these gates with moving trucks, demanding that I surrender my life, my home, and my dignity to her family’s insatiable greed. She had thought that shouting, camera streams, and unearned arrogance could break through my resolve.

She had been wrong.

I pressed the button on the control panel mounted to the stone pillar.

With a low, satisfying hum, the massive iron gates swung closed, locking into place with a firm, decisive click that echoed through the quiet autumn evening.

I turned back and walked up the illuminated brick path toward my home.

The French Provincial manor sat illuminated against the darkening sky, its large windows glowing with warm, welcoming light from within. Inside those walls lay my art, my father’s legacy, my thriving company, and a life built on truth, independence, and strength.

I reached the front porch, unlocked the dark oak door, and stepped inside into the warm foyer. I closed the door softly behind me, listening to the deadbolt slide smoothly into place.

The house was quiet. Peaceful.

Mine.
