Chapter 5 - The Fall of the DynastyThe revelation hit me like a cold wave, instantly clarifying every puzzle piece of the last eighteen months.

The Montgomery family wasn't wealthy. They hadn't been wealthy for a long time.

The "Montgomery Fortune" that Patricia boasted about at every dinner party, the historic legacy that Ryan wore like a badge of nobility—it was all a crumbling facade held together by unpaid loans, credit lines, and ultimately, my money.

When Ryan married me, he hadn't just married an architect; he had married a lifeline. My parents' sudden death and the substantial inheritance that followed had provided Ryan and his mother with an endless bank account to preserve their illusion of aristocratic wealth in Greenwich.

“Madison?” Claire’s voice called through the receiver. “Are you still there?”

“I’m here,” I said, my tone growing steady and hard. “How bad is it, Claire?”

“Bad,” Claire answered frankly. “Patricia’s townhouse on Park Avenue has three separate liens against it. Brandon’s business is under investigation for fraudulent investor reporting. And Ryan... Madison, if what you’re saying about your trust fund is true, Ryan was using your money to cover the interest payments on his firm’s institutional debts.”

“It’s all true,” I said. “Victoria has every bank record, wire confirmation, and forged signature.”

“Then they’re completely finished,” Claire said quietly. “Patricia called an emergency family council meeting at her sister’s house in Stamford tonight. She’s trying to organize a legal defense fund for Ryan.”

“Let her try,” I said. “They can’t outrun the bank records.”

After hanging up with Claire, I walked down to my home office on the ground floor. I unlocked the floor-to-ceiling glass doors leading out to the terrace and stood in the cool night air, looking out toward the dark horizon of the Sound.

The high iron gates at the entrance of my property were securely locked. The floodlights along the perimeter fence shone brightly against the dark driveway.

For five years, I had been living in a trap of my own making, allowing a family of gilded parasites to bleed me dry while convincing me I was the lucky one. But tonight, the gates were shut. The illusion was shattered.

Tomorrow, the real legal battle would begin. Ryan and Patricia would try every dirty tactic, every media spin, and every legal maneuver in the book to save themselves from destruction.

I smiled into the darkness, raising my glass of water in a quiet toast to the quiet house behind me.

Let them try. They had brought trucks, cameras, and noise.

I had brought the truth. And the truth was just getting started.
