Chapter 1 - The Weight of a Drenched DressThe stinging cold of the champagne soaked through the fragile fabric of my black dress, clinging like a second, freezing skin against my chest. Every eye in the Astor Grand ballroom turned toward us, the gentle hum of elite conversation dying instantly as the air pressure in the room shifted.

Damian’s smug, arrogant grin froze on his face. The glass in his hand wobbled, a few golden drops spilling over the rim as he stared past my shoulder. Victoria Langford’s jaw slackened, her perfectly sculpted face twisting in confusion as she looked at the towering figure who had suddenly materialized behind me.

I didn't need to turn around to know who it was. The deep, resonant baritone had cut through the chaos like a blade of ice.

Julian Vance.

Or, as the financial columns whispered in reverent, terrified tones, the silent king of Manhattan real estate and venture capital, a man whose net worth made Victoria’s family fortune look like a rounding error, and whose ruthlessness in business was legendary.

Julian’s large, warm hand settled gently on the bare skin of my waist, pulling me back until I was standing flush against his chest. His touch was an iron anchor, steadying my trembling knees.

“Julian,” Damian stammered, his color draining so fast he suddenly looked sicker than I had felt during my six months of heartbreak. “I—I didn't realize... we were just joking around. Old college acquaintances, you know how it is—”

“We are not acquaintances, Cross,” Julian interrupted, his voice smooth, controlled, and dripping with a lethal, terrifying elegance. He stepped around me, placing himself directly between Damian and me like a dark monolith. “And what I saw wasn't a joke. It was an assault by a coward who clearly doesn't understand the value of what he just ruined.”

Victoria tried to recover her composure, lifting her chin with all the arrogant entitlement her pedigree could muster. “Mr. Vance, surely you aren't making a scene over a spilled glass of wine? My father and you have mutual interests—”

Julian turned his cold, piercing gaze onto her, and Victoria actually stepped backward, silencing herself instantly.

“Your father’s interests, Ms. Langford, currently depend heavily on commercial zoning approvals controlled entirely by my holding company,” Julian said quietly. “Approvals that I am suddenly finding myself disinclined to sign.”

Panic flickered in Damian’s eyes. He dropped his glass, the crystal shattering against the polished marble floor, splashing champagne across his shiny Italian leather shoes. “Julian, please—it was a mistake, an accident! Ask Ava, she knows—”

“Ava doesn't know you anymore,” Julian said coldly. He turned his attention back to me, the ice in his eyes melting into a startling, deep warmth as he looked down at my drenched dress. He slid his custom-tailored tuxedo jacket off his broad shoulders and wrapped it gently around me. It was heavy, smelling faintly of cedar, amber, and expensive cologne, immediately warming my shivering body.

“Come, Ava,” Julian murmured, taking my hand in his strong, steady grip. “You’re done working for Bellmere Events tonight. In fact, you’re done working for them permanently.”

As Julian led me away from the stunned, silent crowd toward the grand exit, I looked back over my shoulder one last time. Damian was standing frozen amid the shattered glass, sweating through his expensive tuxedo, realizing in absolute horror that the woman he had humiliated to impress his new heiress girlfriend had just become untouchable.
