Chapter 5 - The Gala of RedemptionTwo months later, the annual charity gala for the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art was held in the exact same ballroom at the Astor Grand Hotel where my life had shattered.

This time, I wasn't wearing a borrowed assistant’s uniform or fixing orchids with floral pins.

I stood at the top of the grand marble staircase wearing a custom-tailored, deep sapphire silk gown designed by a house in Milan, with vintage diamond drop earrings that belonged to Julian’s grandmother sparkling against my neck.

Julian stood beside me, his arm protectively locked with mine, looking like royalty in a classic midnight-blue tuxedo.

As we descended the staircase, the entire ballroom went quiet—not with shock, but with breathless awe. Flashbulbs popped blindingly from the press pit, but I didn't flinch. I held my head high, smiling naturally, secure in the knowledge that I belonged here just as much as anyone else in the room.

Off to the side near the catering entrance, standing alone in a cheap, ill-fitting rental tuxedo with a bruised ego and a ruined reputation, was Damian Cross.

He looked smaller, older, and thoroughly defeated. His firm was in receivership, his society friends had vanished into thin air, and he had been forced to sneak into the gala as a plus-one for a minor, low-level PR assistant who barely knew his name.

As Julian and I walked past, Damian caught my eye.

He took a half-step forward, his lips parting as if he wanted to speak—perhaps to apologize, perhaps to beg for mercy one last time.

I didn't even break my stride. I looked right through him as if he were completely transparent, a ghost from a past life that no longer existed.

Julian gave my hand a reassuring squeeze, leaning down to whisper in my ear.

“Satisfied?”

May you like

“More than satisfied,” I murmured back.

We joined the inner circle of guests, greeted by museum directors, city mayors, and Fortune 500 CEOs who treated me not as a barista playing dress-up, but as Julian Vance’s equal and partner.
