PART 2: THE FAMILY WAR BEGINS

Alexander stayed beside Sofia’s bed the entire night.
He didn’t move.
He didn’t sleep.
He barely spoke.
He just sat there, holding our daughter’s hand like he was afraid that if he let go…
She would disappear.
I watched him from the kitchen doorway.
The man sitting there looked nothing like the confident businessman I remembered.
No expensive suit.
No perfect image.
No arrogance.
Only a father.
A broken father.
The sunrise slowly entered the apartment.
And with it came reality.
Sofia was safe.
But the people who hurt her were still out there.
And they believed they had won.
I walked toward Alexander.
“Did you sleep?”
He didn’t look up.
“No.”
A pause.
“Neither did you.”
I sat across from him.
For years, Alexander and I had been strangers.
Not enemies.
Just strangers.
Our divorce had been painful.
Not because we stopped caring.
But because we became two people who couldn’t stop hurting each other.
But that night…
All of that disappeared.
Because we were parents first.
“How angry are you?”
I asked quietly.
He looked at me.
And for a second…
I saw the man I married.
The man who once promised to protect our family.
Then his expression hardened.
“I’m not angry.”
That surprised me.
“You’re not?”
He looked toward Sofia’s room.
“I’m focused.”
A chill moved through me.
Because Alexander had always been dangerous when he was calm.
“What does that mean?”
He stood slowly.
“It means Carmen Rodriguez made a decision.”
I watched him.
“She attacked our daughter.”
He picked up his phone.
“Now she will deal with the consequences.”
I wanted justice.
I wanted Carmen punished.
But part of me was afraid.
Because Alexander wasn’t just a father.
He was a powerful man.
And when someone threatened what he loved…
He became someone else.
“Alexander.”
He stopped.
“Don’t become the person you used to be.”
For a moment…
He said nothing.
Then he looked back at me.
“She almost destroyed our daughter.”
His voice was quiet.
“I’m not going to destroy anyone.”
A pause.
“I’m going to expose them.”
That was when I realized.
This wasn’t about revenge.
Not only revenge.
It was about truth.
A few hours later, Sofia woke up.
The first thing she asked was:
“Is Dad here?”
My heart broke.
Because despite everything…
She still needed both of us.
I went into her room.
Alexander followed.
Her eyes filled with tears when she saw him.
“Dad…”
He sat beside her.
“My little girl.”
She looked away.
“I’m sorry.”
His expression changed.
“For what?”
“I ruined everything.”
The words shocked me.
“You didn’t ruin anything.”
Sofia shook her head.
“I should have listened to you.”
Alexander gently lifted her chin.
“Look at me.”
She did.
“This was not your fault.”
Her tears fell.
“I thought Javier loved me.”
Alexander became still.
“Tell me about him.”
Sofia hesitated.
Then whispered:
“He wasn’t like his mother.”
A bitter smile appeared.
“That’s what I thought.”
She looked at us.
“At first, he was perfect.”
“He listened.”
“He cared.”
“He made me feel safe.”
I looked down.
Because that was how manipulation worked.
It never started with cruelty.
It started with trust.
“When did things change?” I asked.
Sofia swallowed.
“After we got engaged.”
“His mother became involved in everything.”
“The wedding.”
“The finances.”
“The condo.”
Alexander’s jaw tightened.
“Did Javier ever ask you directly?”
Sofia looked embarrassed.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Two weeks before the wedding.”
She closed her eyes.
“He said it would make his family feel secure.”
I felt anger rising.
“And what did you say?”
“I said no.”
A pause.
“He got quiet.”
“What did he say?”
Sofia’s voice became small.
“He said…”
She looked at the blanket.
“If you really loved me, you wouldn’t care about a piece of property.”
My hands tightened.
There it was.
The manipulation.
Making her feel guilty for protecting herself.
“And you still married him.”
Sofia started crying.
“I thought he was hurt.”
I sat beside her.
“Oh, Sofia…”
She covered her face.
“I was so stupid.”
“No.”
I held her hand.
“You trusted someone.”
“There’s a difference.”
Then Alexander’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“Who is it?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Detective Miller.”
He stepped away.
A few minutes later, he returned.
“What happened?”
He looked at Sofia.
Then at me.
“The hotel cameras were accessed.”
My stomach tightened.
“Accessed?”
He nodded.
“Someone tried to erase the footage.”
Sofia froze.
“What?”
Alexander continued.
“But they failed.”
My heart started racing.
“So there’s proof?”
“Yes.”
A pause.
“Not just proof of the assault.”
“Proof Javier was involved.”
Sofia covered her mouth.
“No…”
Alexander placed the phone down.
“The hotel security system captured him.”
“Before Carmen entered the room…”
“He gave her access.”
The room went silent.
My daughter stared at him.
Her husband.
The man she loved.
The man who promised forever.
“He let them in?”
Alexander nodded.
Sofia’s face broke.
“No…”
“He wouldn’t.”
I wanted to comfort her.
I wanted to tell her it was impossible.
But the truth was already there.
Javier didn’t just fail to protect her.
He helped create the situation.
That night…
The man she married became a stranger.
Alexander walked toward the window.
His phone buzzed again.
This time, his face changed.
“What is it?”
He looked at me.
Then at Sofia.
“The Rodriguez family filed a complaint.”
I frowned.
“What?”
He turned the screen toward me.
My eyes widened.
The complaint accused Sofia.
Of assault.
Of attacking Carmen.
Of creating a scene.
For a moment, I couldn’t speak.
They weren’t just lying.
They were trying to make my daughter the criminal.
Alexander slowly placed the phone down.
And said the words that made the entire room go cold.
“They’re not trying to escape punishment.”
A pause.
“They’re trying to destroy Sofia before she can speak.”
He grabbed his coat.
“Where are you going?”
He looked at me.
“To end this.”
“Alexander…”
He opened the door.
His voice was calm.
“Carmen Rodriguez wanted a war.”
May you like
A pause.
“She’s about to learn what happens when she attacks my daughter.”
