Chapter 12 - The VerdictThe jury deliberated for precisely three hours and fourteen minutes.

On Thursday afternoon, the courtroom crowded with press, federal agents, and observers. The silence was absolute as the jury foreman—a tall, stern retired rail engineer—handed the verdict sheets to the court clerk.

Judge Thorne cleared his throat.

"On count one, conspiracy to commit interstate wire fraud: We find the defendant, Grant Miller, guilty. We find the defendant, Celeste Vance, guilty."

"On count two, aggravated identity theft: Guilty. Guilty."

"On count three, capital murder in the death of Sarah Vance: We find the defendant, Grant Miller, guilty in the first degree. We find the defendant, Celeste Vance, guilty in the first degree."

"On count four, capital murder in the death of David Vance: Guilty in the first degree. Guilty in the first degree."

A low gasp rippled through the gallery.

Celeste’s hand twitched on the table, her eyes widening in a sudden, glassy terror as she looked at her attorney. She opened her mouth as if to protest, to scream, to demand the authority she had wielded for seven years—but no sound came out. She was simply a convicted felon, facing life in federal prison without the possibility of parole.

Grant didn't move. He stared blankly at the defense table as the marshals stepped forward, clicking heavy steel leg irons around his ankles.

Prosecutor Chen turned to me, offering a quiet, solemn handshake. "Justice was done today, Nora."

I stood up, adjusting my jacket. I looked across the well of the court one last time at Celeste as she was led away through the side door. Our eyes met for a single second. In her face, I saw no remorse, no understanding—only the bitter, hollow realization that her grand design had crumbled into dust.

I walked out of the courtroom beside Marianne Vale into the warm afternoon sun.

"It's over, Nora," Marianne said, opening her umbrella against the bright glare.

"Not quite," I replied, looking toward the street. "There's one more thing I need to do."
